Are puppies born with worms, or do they get them from their mother?

Most puppies are born with worms. They can get them from there mother through the placenta. Puppies will have eggs in the poop that are from worms even if you do not see worms in the stool or any scooting. Typically we deworm puppies 2 times due to this. I would recommend a good deworming and picking up feces and throwing it away for a few weeks to prevent infestation of the yard and re infection of ziggy

Pets are vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age, and are usually weaned off of mom at this age. Since you have another pet in the home that does go outside, it is best to start vaccines for this pup once she is 6-8 weeks of age. Intestinal worms usually don't make pets too sick, but it can cause loose stool and potential vomiting. They still will eat well and do well as long as the worms are treated in a timely fashion (within 1-2 weeks), so this is an easy fix if you do encounter this. If your other pet is on a monthly heartworm prevention, then it has a natural intestinal dewormer in it as well that can protect your pet against 2 types of worms (hookworms and roundworms), which are the most common types of worms seen in puppies. But again, if you do happen to encounter a worm problem, this is easily dealt with with the appropriate dewormer, so keep an eye out for any loose stools. Yes, puppies can become infected with intestinal parasites 'in utero' (before being born), through nursing or from their environment. You can submit the stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites. Begin a deworming protocol when the pup is two weeks old.

Yes, theoretically if eggs or the segments of certain types of worms are present in a persons clothes and the puppy ingests those eggs or segments, the puppy can get infected. However, this would require feces, or at least direct contact, from the anus of the infected dog to be in contact with the person. This would also have to be at the exact time that the eggs are being shed. Because these parasites don’t survive very long outside of their host, the puppy would have to ingest them directly from the person within a relatively short period of time.

The vaccinations that Storm would have received 2 weeks ago will not have treated any pre-existing worm burden. Worms in puppies is very common and it is possible that Storm had worms prior to playing with the other puppy. They are easily treated and I would recommend contacting your veterinarian so that they can prescribe a suitable course of deworming for your puppy.

The amount of times the puppy needs to be dewormed really depends on the type of dewormer that is used. It also depends on the type of parasites that the puppy has. The best thing is to deworm him and then have a fecal sample tested for parasites at one of his puppy visits.

Some wormers can be excreted with the milk. This is not necessarily damaging to the pups, however you should read the wormer's instruction sheet before giving it to your lactating dog. It will state whether it is suitable for lactating bitches. Puppies can be wormed with puppy wormer at 2 weeks.
