Why does my puppy have bloody diarrhea after eating a bacon treat?

Bacon (even if not expired) can most certainly cause diarrhea in dogs. I would put Dempsey on a bland diet for a few days of boiled skinless boneless chicken breast and white rice. If the diarrhea is persisting or the blood continues I would have him seen by a veterinarian for an exam and medication for the diarrhea. Diarrhea with some frank blood indicates inflammation in the colon and can be caused by eating foods that upset the stomach, but can also be caused by other things such as parasites. Your vet will be able to test for that. In the future you may want to use something like chicken or carrots as a treat for Dempsey rather than bacon.

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

See your veterinarian if Bailey develops lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or if the stool has the appearance of raspberry jelly. A bland diet is plain white rice mixed with one of the following: cottage cheese, boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cooked/drained ground beef or cooked/drained ground turkey.

The diarrhea could be irritating Odin's GI tract, leading to the bleeding. The bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea. Feed it in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
