My puppy has a bladder cyst. Is surgery safe for a young dog?

Poor Osc has some awful health troubles at the moment! I can understand your reservation about doing surgery when he has heart problems, but as a vet, I would not recommend doing sugery if I thought the risks were too high. I don't believe your vet would recommend surgery if they didn't think it would be safe to do on him. While any surgery and anesthesia has its complications, which does increase with specific health problems, that doesn't mean it can be done safely. During surgery, the animal is monitored very closely, and the anesthetic drug protocol is tailored for the animal and it's current health problems. Ultimately, it is up to you as to whether or not you want Osc to have surgery, but again I don't think your vet would have suggested it if they felt it would be unsafe. I recommend speaking to your vet about your concerns, and how they will handle things during the surgery to keep him as safe as possible. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

It would be more dangerous to let Roma live with the stones. Leaving them in her will cause irritation and damage to the bladder lining, leading to bleeding. The stones will also inflame and irritate the bladder walls causing swelling and pain. There is also the potential that the stones could cause an obstruction of the urethra which fatal without treatment. Old age isn't a reason to not do surgery, and as long as she is otherwise healthy, I would recommend having these stones removed from Roma's bladder.

Oh no, I'm so sorry Bonnie has an anal mass! I can understand being concerned about doing surgery, but age isn't necessarily a reason to not due surgery. If your vet feels it's safe to do surgery, then I would do the surgery. If it is a tumor, removing it may prevent it from spreading. A cyst may need to be removed surgically anyway because they can continually reform and burst. I would discuss with your vet your concerns about surgery, and your vet can explain why they feel it's the best option. I hope this helps!

Generally, that is not the case and at least a mild sedative is required. Most patients do fine with anesthesia. In reality even if under anesthesia or sedation, that would be a very quick removal. Hello, I’m so sorry about your pup. It’s a bit unusual for them to develop cancer unless it’s a venereal disease. We would need more specific information about a urineanalysis, cytology, surgery report and bloodwork to give you a better idea as to what may be going on. However it sounds like what you really need to determine exactly what is going on and what type of cancer she has if any would be to pursue further care with an internist or an oncologist. Speak to your veterinarian about a referral to see an internist. Again it’s a bit unusual for a dog this young to develop cancer in the bladder. A very bad UTI may indeed cause some cysts vs cancer will typically cause more solid tumors. We hope you can get further answers soon, best of luck.

While it is impossible to tell exactly what type of tumor it is and give a prognosis following removal, it is likely that removing the tumor will make him more comfortable. Depending on the approach, the surgical site may be rather large and require some care and pain management at home. That does sound very concerning! I would apply pressure to try to stop the bleeding. Because it's been a continual problem, the cyst may need to be removed surgically. I recommend having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis done on Treeko. This will give the vet a detail picture of his anesthetic risk, and can make the determination if he can be put under anesthesia safely.
