Is my puppy's black, tarry stool from blood or amoxicillin meds?

It seems a little unusual for a single dose of meloxicam to affect Blanca after two weeks, but I suppose it is possible. I'd recommend having your vet examine the stool and Blanca. They might also recommend checking some lab work.

The change is stool color is probably from the medication or new supplement. It doesn’t look like it is from blood from the photo. As long as he’s feeling fine finish the antibiotics and check the stool after they are done. It should go back to his normal stool color. Black stools is usually a sign of bleeding from the stomach or small intestines, it's definitely not a good sign and is not likely to be due to the antibiotics. i would recommend taking Curt back to the vet ASAP for re-evaluation of the situation.

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Due to Destiny's age there aren't any home remedies if she truly has melena. It might just be residual from shock secondary to hypothermia. If she is acting fine otherwise I would hope her stool will return to a more normal color. Puppy poop is tarry and can be darker in color. It doesn't look like adult stool and hers wouldn't look like a puppy who is nursing. If she begins to get sick the best thing would be to take her to a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Destiny the very best!

I would recommend that you find an emergency vet. Dark and tarry stools can indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, which could be life threatening. I would discontinue the prednisone until she is evaluated by a vet.

Black stool indicates digested blood from the upper GI tract (esophagus, stomach or upper small intestines). It could be that Daisy's dewormer killed a large burden of parasites in her stomach that contained blood, or that she has a significant GI ulcer. Daisy should see her vet to determine if there is a likelihood of active bleeding, a heavy burden of parasites in her stool, and then treat with any necessary antacids. Given her young age, this sign is more concerning and urgent in nature.
