My puppy has black spots on his tummy. Are they normal and harmless?

My 10 week old puppy has these black spots on his tummy! They aren't causing him pain? Are these normal?

Without images or a physical exam, it can be difficult to determine definitively what is on your pup's skin. That said, many puppies have patches of darker skin on their bellies. If these areas are flat, smooth to the touch and not bothering him, then it is probably just his skin coloration. If the areas are itchy or raised, then it would be a good idea to have them checked out by a vet since this may indicate a skin infection or some other problem.

Without seeing the black spots in person, I can't say the ones on Mika's belly are normal or not. They could be caused by hyperpigmentation. The black spots are in most cases harmless and not a cause for concern especially if they are not accompanied by signs of irritation and only affect the fur with no significant changes to the underlying skin. If the spots are itchy to Mika, he has hair loss around the area, it's crusty, or he develops fluid filled bumps, then it is something more serious, such as bacterial infection or fungal infection. I'd recommend taking him into your vet for them to examine the black spots, and to determine definitively what is causing them.

If it is not associated with itchiness or discomfort, there is no need to be too concerned about this. It may be normal for her however, that black pigment could also be the start of a fungal or bacterial infection of the skin.

The only reason I think it may be normal is because it appears to be bilaterally symmetrical (the same on both sides). I suggest you monitor it closely and if there are any significant changes then take her to the vet for evaluation.

The large spots appear to be normal skin pigmentation and are likely no cause for concern. The smaller spots may be simple dirt or grime. You can use a pet wipe or a plain, unscented baby wipe to clean her as needed.

It is possible that this is a bacterial skin infection called impetigo/puppy pyoderma that is relatively common in puppies. Another possible problem is that Bella may actually have some blackheads/irritated skin on her belly. With either of these conditions if the spots are mild and Bella is not bothered by them you could try gently cleaning them with a gentle cleanser decided for us in dogs. If Bella is scratching/rubbing at the spots or there is a colored/odorous discharge I would recommend having Bella seen by your veterinarian so that they can further examine the spots and determine the need for another treatments. My puppy has a belly rash and brown spots. Are they normal? Advice?

I’m not sure if the lighting makes the skin look normal in your picture, or if the rash you are describing is faint enough to not show up on the picture, but her skin appears fairly normal to me. The brown spots I see are normal pigmentation variants. Often times mild skin problems in young dogs are bacterial and bathing in a shampoo that has chlorhexidine or salicylic acid can be helpful. These can be found in the human shampoo aisle in the dandruff area. If it does not seem to help then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Why does my puppy have small brown bumps and spots on his belly?

Skin lesions like these can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Sometimes puppies like Palmer can get a type of “puppy acne” along the belly as well. If the lesions do not start to go away in the next week, or if they start getting worse, I recommend making an appointment to have Palmer seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bumps you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment.

My puppy's belly changed color. Should I be worried or is it normal?

This looks like hyperpigmentation. It typically occurs in lightly pigmented, sparsely haired regions as dogs get older. It can also be caused my inflammation so just make sure she is not spending too much time sunbathing and that there are no other signs like licking/scratching/lesions. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on your picture, the brown spots are normal freckling. I can't tell if there are 2 red bumps with yellow discharge. If there are that could be a skin infection. Skin infections can cause her to lick the area or scratch. We treat with oral antibiotics. If there aren't any red bumps there then I think her belly is normal. Have a great day!
