My puppy has black hard stool, pain, and anemia. What's wrong?

Black stool and extreme weakness are concerning symptoms that are an emergency and require veterinary care, especially in a young puppy. It would be best to bring Aura into your vet immediately for an exam and treatment.

The clinical signs in combination with the age of your dog are causes for concern for the parvovirus. I would make sure she is tested for this immediately, because of how aggressive this disease process can be. It often requires significant hospitalization and therapy in order to make things right.

I would recommend taking Larbie to the vet ASAP. These symptoms don't fit with one disease process. I would be concerned about dehydration and inappropriate nutrition in a puppy showing signs of constipation. Tarry stools indicate blood in the GI tract, which could be a sign of Parvo viral infection or intestinal parasites. Weakness and paleness could be related to anemia, external parasites, internal parasites, infection, etc.

It sounds like Euro is really sick. I would put a little Karo syrup or honey on his gums to ensure his blood sugar isn't too low. With his gums being white and his stool looks black I would strongly encourage to take him to your vet or local emergency clinic ASAP. He could be suffering for a GI bleed, a large number of intestinal parasites, a fatal virus like parvo or much more. With him being so small, he is likely dehydrated and Anemic. The black stool could be blood in the stool, which could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have June seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as blood in the stool can lead to anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. In the mean time, if she is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken once it has cooled. It is impossible to know without a full post mortem exam exactly what was going on internally. The soft tarry stool and low blood count indicates a source of internal bleeding in the stomach or small intestine but there is no way to predict why this occurred - tumours, viral and bacterial infections, twisted bowel, obstructions or severe inflammatory bowel disease can all cause similar signs

Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!
