Why is my puppy barking and whining like it's crying all the time?

Young puppies will whine or vocalize when cold, hungry, sick, injured or if left alone for long periods of time. You can make sure he is fed, warm and has company. To diagnose illness or injury, he would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian.

It's possible something may have startled your puppy, however if he is whimpering or appearing very agitated it could indicate an issue such as pain or illness causing him to feel unwell. If the problem persists or you see other signs of illness, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP as very young puppies can become very ill quickly.

Excessive crying can be a sign of a health issue, so I would have him seen by a vet immediately (take along his mother and siblings as well). Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and very susceptible to cold and low blood sugar, so any potential problems with them need to be check out by a vet right away to give them their best chance at survival. His crying could signify problems in feeding (not getting enough milk), cold, or low blood sugar. Please take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Okie. It sounds like he is painful. Has there been any history of recent trauma? If not, he could be experiencing neck or back pain. Another consideration is if he has a developmental bone/joint disease. It is sometimes difficult in puppies as they can cry in response to a behavioral issue as opposed to being painful. Try to keep him quiet before his appointment so that he does not exacerbate anything in case he is painful. Be sure to not give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. Puppies usually cry when they are hungry or cold. Make sure she is latching and that mama dog has milk. Also open the puppies mouth and make sure the roof of the mouth looks normal- and no cleft palate. You may need to go buy puppy milk replacer and bottles.
