My 7-month puppy barks a lot and is 17 lbs. Is he too big or vocal?

Sounds like a possible case of the puppy zoomies! This is when a puppy gets very excited, runs around a ton, and may bark or hop at things exciting to them. This is a good opportunity to offer toys such as something stuffed or tuggable to play with to help him get out that energy on objects you don't mind him chewing on, rather than things such as shoes or household items! If he's barking randomly, looking up how to teach "quiet" may be useful. 9 weeks is the perfect age to start some basic training obedience. Often times, teaching things such as "speaking" on command AND "quiet" together can help with barking issues. Searching on YouTube for both should give you some ideas. Hi there! He is adorable! What you are describing as biting I am assuming is teething as he is just a pup. Teething is normal and expected in puppies as they start developing their teeth. You can get teething toys at your local pet store. Discourage teething on you and when observed hand him the teething toy. This usually works. Loud barking is expected in a big dog puppy like him. Hello. Your picture seems to show a very healthy young dog, but without being able to feel how prominent the ribs & backbone can be palpated, it is impossible to ascertain his condition. A dog, under a year of age, should have some muscle & fat protecting the underlying skeletal structure. With just a little pressure, you should be able to feel ribs & backbone, not sharp points. That is a better way to tell than just by weight because size & bone structure can affect things. If there is a fairly good layer of flesh on your dog, he should be just fine. What a cute puppy! Looking at his age, current weight and build, I would guess somewhere between 40-50lbs. This is completely a guess however. There is a breed analysis called Wisdom Panel and it is fairly accurate on the adult size and is very accurate for the breeds detected. A Havenese should weigh between 7-13 pounds fully grown, so based on that, it could be that Kiba is a bit bigger. Now, he's a puppy, and because he's still growing, I don't recommend introducing any diets as they may interfere with his growth. To keep him from getting overweight, I would cut out all treats. Kiba shouldn't be getting treats every day, as a treat should only be an occasional thing. For now, however, no more treats, cheese, or chews. Just his dog food twice a day, feed according to the package instructions, and make sure that he gets exercise twice a day for at least 20-30 minutes :-)

Well there can be certain breed standards of weight, but even as a puppy, it's hard to say what's a standardized weight. If you are concerned that Bella may be fat, it's best to have her seen by a vet to discuss this. It may be she is fine and not overweight. I hope this helps.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At least in the pictures, he looks pretty good. Very handsome dog. These dogs do tend to show their ribs a bit. I think that he could benefit from perhaps gaining a few pounds but not much. In terms of his growth, he has likely reach his growth plateau which is why he has not been growing much lately. If he is otherwise doing well in terms of appetite and activity level, I would not worry much. I do think that it would be best to relay this to your veterinarian who knows his medical/preventative care history so that we ensure that his caloric intake is appropriate for his age and most importantly activity level. This is something that can be easily done and make a difference in terms of him gaining some weight. Again, he is very handsome so congrats as it looks like you have been taking good care of him.
