My puppy ate an oxygen absorber and now has diarrhea. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 22 days old | 20 lbs

My puppy chewed an oxygen absorber package (I attached an image) online it says it contains iron but is not toxic for pets. I called a local vet and they said not to worry however he now has diarrhea (which he never has had before) do we watch and see if it gets better or is this very serious?

Those packets really are non toxic, so the diarrhea is almost certainly unrelated. Did he by any chance eat food that the package was packaged with? It is possible that that is causing diarrhea.

I would be comfortable with you monitoring the situation for the next 24 hours and contacting a veterinarian for an exam if he continues to have diarrhea at that point. If her stops eating, starts vomiting, becomes very lethargic, or otherwise seems ill, then it would be appropriate to have an exam sooner.

Usually the content of the packet is non-toxic, so there is no worry there. The problem may be the packet, as it passes through the intestine. Since your puppy is relatively small, it might cause an obstruction. But I see, you say he did not eat the paper. So I do not think you have to worry about any detrimental effect, as the content is not toxic.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! All these products contain different materials most of which are non-toxic. However, there are some of these materials that are toxic such as elemental iron which may in fact be toxic, especially to the gastrointestinal tract and may result in vomiting. I am concerned that he vomited which is why I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Make sure to take to your veterinarian another one of those packets he ate if possible so that they can read the materials in it. They would be able to at least start on therapy to make him feel better. Good luck and have a great day!

A small dog (15lbs or less) is at risk for iron toxicity. Given Oreo's weight range, he will likely suffer no ill effects. He may have some GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. If the packet contained silica gel or beads, it is non toxic and there is no cause for concern.

The toxicology site I just referenced states that these are low toxicity. The packet itself could cause a foreign body obstruction, but unlikely in a 75# dog. The iron can cause some gastrointestinal upset such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. However they do recommend offering food, water, and or a small amount of milk to help protect the GI tract. My dog ate treats from a bag, now vomiting and diarrhea. Is she okay?

If she did not eat the plastic baggie then she should probably be fine. Her symptoms should be self-limiting (meaning they should resolve on their own in 24-36 hours). If she actually ingested the baggie then I would be a bit concerned that it is causing an obstruction. If she ate the baggie, I think a vet visit is in order. The diarrhea is not as concerning as the vomiting. I would recommend you hold her off food for 8 hours to give her GI tract a rest. If after 8 hours there is no more vomiting, then you can start feeding her. Small feedings of her regular diet every few hours for a couple days. You can also add in probiotic (one made for dogs, not humans). You can pick up a probiotic at your local Petco or any large pet store. Other than the probiotic do not give any medications. My puppy ate a desiccant packet. Should I worry if it's silica gel?

The silica gel packets are virtually non-toxic. They are labelled 'do not 'eat' because they aren't meant to be eaten and the dust from the processing and creation of silica is irritating to the skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract and can cause problems for people exposed to it on a regular basis, such as those who work making them. The beads do not enlarge in the stomach and the exterior packaging is usually soft and presents little risk of injury of obstruction.

It is very possible, and I would be worried if he's now having vomiting and diarrhea, as that may indicate a partial blockage (where some but not all stool is able to properly pass). If his symptoms continue, or none of the pee pad is passing, I would schedule a vet visit immediately to check for foreign body.

Puppy ate foam bedding, now has diarrhea and won't eat. What to do?

You should be concerned. There may some of that foreign material/bedding stuck in his stomach or intestines causing a blockage. This can be very serious. I would consider this an emergency. Please get Chikodi to a vet as soon as you can. Not eating and diarrhea can get a 7# puppy extremely dehydrated which can be life threatening.

An ordinary kitchen napkin should pass on its own if Ollie chewed up into bits. You may see some minor stomach upset. This can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Monitor for lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
