My puppy ate acrylic paint. Is it toxic? Should I call the vet?

She will likely be unaffected, particularly if she chewed the wood into small pieces first. If she swallowed a large piece there would be potential for stomach upset or gastrointestinal obstruction. I would monitor her and call your vet if she vomits, develops diarrhea or has a decrease in appetite.

The good news is that from my research, Behr has never made a paint that contained lead pigment. Because it doesn't contain lead, it's much safer but you may see some mild GI upset from this ingestion in the form of vomiting. I can give you a home remedy for Tiger in case you do see vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. As long as it is a water based paint and you have washed the area of thoroughly I don't suspect that there will be any problem. Certainly you should make any attempt to prevent her from trying to lick the area in the meantime in case anything residual that could be on there. You might consider either obtaining an ecollar from a vet or pet store or watching a YouTube video on how to make a homemade one. Without seeing the ingredients on the paint I can't be one hundred percent sure that it is completely non-harmful. You could consider calling the pet poison helpline if you are becoming concerned about any possible ingestion then they will be able to go over the possible effects of the substance that is being eaten. Writing ink is generally not toxic, and must be consumed in large quantities before medical attention is needed. The amount of ink contained in a pen is unlikely to cause toxicity in Pancho, but I would be more concerned if he ate the pen portion itself. If he hasn't, gently flush out his mouth with warm water, and clean any ink in his mouth. You can monitor him for signs of ink toxicity (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, mouth irritation), and if you see any of those signs, take him into the vet right away. Otherwise, I think he will be ok :-)

While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. It can take up to a couple of days to see problems from a foreign body if one was going to occur, but given that Snowball ate a very small paint chip, I doubt that will happen. I'd also expect to see some GI upset by now. It's great that she is eating, drinking, and behaving normally, and I wouldn't be too worried about her. In all likelihood, she will be just fine.
