Why are my puppies crying while feeding? Is this normal or a concern?

Puppies often cry when they are eating, it's not unusual and they usually grow out of it within a few weeks.

Puppies usually cry when they are hungry or cold. Make sure she is latching and that mama dog has milk. Also open the puppies mouth and make sure the roof of the mouth looks normal- and no cleft palate. You may need to go buy puppy milk replacer and bottles. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Puppies usually start feeding in the first 2-3 hrs of their lives. You should try and 'latch' the puppy on the nipple. Once the puppy has open mouth you just need to put the nipple in the mouth and wait 20-30 seconds for the puppy to start feeding. If he is not taking any milk or keeps crying for another 2-3hrs, you should get in touch with your local vets. Milk replacer should be used only as the last resort.

Excessive crying can be a sign of a health issue, so I would have him seen by a vet immediately (take along his mother and siblings as well). Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and very susceptible to cold and low blood sugar, so any potential problems with them need to be check out by a vet right away to give them their best chance at survival. His crying could signify problems in feeding (not getting enough milk), cold, or low blood sugar. Please take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

Puppies cry when they want something like to eat or attention, or possibly to go outside. They are a little young to know how to be properly potty trained. I would make sure the mom is nursing then properly and everyone is properly gaining weight. I would make sure there isn't another reason they could be crying. With them being so young, I would be careful letting them spend too much time in the environment because they are at high risk for different illnesses since their immune system is weak and they haven't had their shots. Unfortunately puppies are very fragile, and some out of a litter may not survive. It is very important for the mother to eat so she can provide enough milk for the puppies, and it's possible that if she is a bad eater, she does not have enough energy to produce enough milk for the puppies leading those two to die. She needs to be on a high quality puppy formulated food to meet her nutritional needs when nursing puppies, and I would put her on a puppy food right away. You will slowly have to mix it in with her regular diet over a couple of days so she does not get sick from the sudden change in food. Weigh the puppy daily, and if it's not gaining weight each day, you will need to supplement it with puppy formula. You can get that from a pet store or grocery store, and I recommend KMR. You would know if the puppy was hungry if it was crying all the time, not just whimpering in its sleep. Puppies and dogs dream, and they can make nosies in response to their dreams, so that may be why he's whimpering. A vet visit for both would also be a good idea just to make sure everything is ok. The length depends on how hungry they are and how much milk she has. If your puppies are not gaining weight and do not have round full bellies after nursing, she may not have enough milk for them and you may have to supplement them with puppy milk.
