Is it normal for my pug puppy to sleep with her head up and fall?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This sounds very strange and I wouldn't say it is normal. Possible causes are extreme tiredness, but at almost 12 weeks of age that is strange too. The fact you had to pour water on her face to wake her up isn't normal. I would worry about a seizure, a liver shunt or low blood sugar. If she isn't eating well and/or is having vomit or diarrhea and isn't as active as she has been she should be seen by a Vet. If this occurs again try to video tape it and take her the vet. I wish Peach the best!

Hello. If Bella's breathing appears normal when she sleeps, then this is not too concerning, but it would not hurt to have her evaluated just to be sure. She is too young for most chronic conditions, but if she is not on any heartworm preventative, this would be a good thing to check on. Congrats on your new puppy! You didn't post a lot of information about Bella but I will help as best I can. Young puppies breathe more rapidly than older dogs, even when sleeping. If you hear any congestion or see any discharge from her eyes or nose, I would recommend having her seen by a vet. Young puppies have a weak immune system so they are susceptible to upper respiratory infections. If you need to know how to pick her up, I would recommend looping your arm under her front limbs and use your other arm to scoop behind her rear limbs, then lift. This will balance her weight evenly. There are other conditions such as inflammatory and infection diseases that can affect dogs. I highly recommend that you have Leo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Good luck and have a good night!

Unfortunately pugs are extremely brachycephalic dogs and it is not rare that they cannot breathe properly and fall unconscious due to lack of oxygen. You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for assessment and an exam. The extremely flat face and nose causes two problems: the opening of the nose is often obstructed and can be surgically enlarged to help with breathing. Also the soft palate is often way to big as there is no snout, and often obstructs the larynx, cutting off the air flow. This can be surgically adjusted. Both these conditions can also cause heart failure. Please take your dog to a veterinarian or veterinary surgeon for an exam soon.

Hi , I would check her breathing. Does it look regular and not too fast ? You could check how many times her chest moves up in 15 sec and then time it by four. This would be her respiratory rate. In a minute, the respiratory rate should be under 40. This is a bit of a long shot, as I am sure she is young and healthy and probably just the way for her to settle to sleep. However, if she seems distressed or if there are any symptoms that you are not sure about, have her checked over. Hope it is nothing to be worried about.

I recommend to have Bella examined by the veterinarian. The coughing could be related to an infection. The walking funny is not expected and is a little more worrisome. Small puppies cannot regulate their blood sugar well and are prone to low blood sugar. It's best to play it safe and have Bella examined today if possible.
