Is my 12-year-old pug okay? He's breathing poorly and sleeping more.

Unfortunately pugs are extremely brachycephalic dogs and it is not rare that they cannot breathe properly and fall unconscious due to lack of oxygen. You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for assessment and an exam. The extremely flat face and nose causes two problems: the opening of the nose is often obstructed and can be surgically enlarged to help with breathing. Also the soft palate is often way to big as there is no snout, and often obstructs the larynx, cutting off the air flow. This can be surgically adjusted. Both these conditions can also cause heart failure. Please take your dog to a veterinarian or veterinary surgeon for an exam soon.

Unfortunately brachycephalic dogs like pugs (flat nosed dogs) often have breathing problems due to the shape of their head. This can also cause congestive heart failure which aggravates the condition. I suggest you take Neffer to your vet to rule out a heart problem. Your vet will be able to assess why your pug has problems breathing and problems with exercise and will discuss improving air intake by surgical means (e.g. opening the nostrils further, or reducing the size of the soft palate). Panting may also be a sign of Cushing;s disease, which should also be ruled out. This can be done with a blood test.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Coco!! Since she is such a young baby and because of her breed I think she should see a Vet as soon as you can. Also since it has now been 2 days and she is less energetic. Coco may have an upper respiratory infection from a viral or bacterial infection, or kennel cough, or pneumonia or the flu. The Vet, after their exam, may recommend chest X-rays and likely will prescribe antibiotics. I hope this helps and I hope Coco is back to her cute Pug self soon!

Please have Lola seen by a vet immediately. Pugs as a breed can be predisposed to respiratory issues, and difficulty breathing in a pet dealing with bronchitis could be extremely dangerous. Please have her seen right away. If your regular vet isn’t open please go to a 24 hour clinic. Call them to let them know you are on your way if possible so they can prepare. Best of luck! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hugo! If Hugo is having trouble breathing this is an emergency and he should be evaluated by a Vet as soon as possible. When dogs can not breathe they tend to not relax and lie down. Or when they lie down they extend their necks and/or abduct their elbows. Causes of trouble breathing: congestive heart failure, anemia (bleeding some where), pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection, fluid around the lungs or heart, pain, or cancer. I am glad Hugo is eating and drinking. I would call your Vet to have him examined and X-rays of his chest to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps and I wish Hugo a speedy recovery!
