How much psyllium husk for my 100lb dog with IBS to firm stool?

I am very sorry to hear about your puppy. We do occasionally use psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid (such as metamucil) for mild constipation in pets. In a small pet we would normally start with 1 teaspoon (5ml) daily added to food and may increase to several teaspoons if needed. We also sometimes use canned pumpkin for constipation. I would, however, recommend seeking a veterinary exam for your puppy as severe constipation is not normally seen in a dog this age. Also, if your puppy has lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, or pain when having the bowel movement these would be signs to seek veterinary care.

Hello, sorry to hear about Prince. The dose is 2 tablespoonfuls per day per dog which can be given in a single dose or divided into 2-3 fractions per day. However, metamucil will cause bulkier stools and should be given with an easily digestible diet such as Hill i/D or royal cannin GI low fat. I recommend consulting with your veterinarian prior to starting the metamucil to ensure Prince is a good candidate for it. Hope this helps and best of luck

I can't say that giving a dog psyllium husks is my first line of treatment as it can be a laxative as well as a fiber to firm stool. I would recommend fasting for 12-24 hours. And then feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until normal stools. I would add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If you have already tried a bland diet and she hasn't responded then I would have your Vet examine her and provide medications. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, dietary indiscretion, new food/treat/table food, food allergy/intolerance, IBD, kidney or liver problems and cancer. You can try the Psyllium husk but that will require him to eat. Also it isn't guaranteed to work if his GI tract is not pushing food through. Poor guy. He may have responded to he medication before but this may be different. I would suggest taking him in to get an enema done if he is truly backed up and won't eat. Metamucil may help some but I would keep her dose very small like around 1 teaspoon twice a day. You could also try to just add a small amount of canned plain pumpkin instead of the Metamucil. I would also consider trying to add in a probiotic and a sensitive stomach diet. I like a few different types of probiotics - propectalin, vetriscience probiotic chews, purina pro plan fortiflora or proviable. If you decide to switch her food, I would transition her from the old food to the new food very slowly over a 2 weeks period. If you haven't had her examined by a vet I would strongly recommend to have her looked at. There are a lot of things that can also cause loose stools like parasites, food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial infections, giardia, and much more. Your vet will start with checking a fecal sample. I hope this helps!

While colace can be used to treat constipation in animals, I prefer to use alternative treatments first that may be less likely to cause diarrhea and also can be good long term solutions. Adding psyllium husk to the diet is a great way to increase fiber intake and support healthy bowel movements. You can start with one teaspoon twice a day and gradually increase. I would increase the moisture intake in her food by feeding a predominantly wet diet. You can also consider a prescription high fiber diet.

If you wish to increase fiber content in the food, you can add canned pumpkin to help normalize or make stools more solid. Metamucil crackers can also be used and for a dog Shero's size you can give 2 crackers per day. I would start with the canned pumpkin in the food and see if this works well.
