How much Metamucil for a small dog with chronic constipation?

Giving a teaspoon or so of Metamucil should be fine and may help your dog go. You may also want to try to increase his water consumption because even mild dehydration can cause constipation. If these remedies don't work and your dog hasn't defecated in over 2 days then I would recommend taking him in to the vet.

I am very sorry to hear about your puppy. We do occasionally use psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid (such as metamucil) for mild constipation in pets. In a small pet we would normally start with 1 teaspoon (5ml) daily added to food and may increase to several teaspoons if needed. We also sometimes use canned pumpkin for constipation. I would, however, recommend seeking a veterinary exam for your puppy as severe constipation is not normally seen in a dog this age. Also, if your puppy has lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, or pain when having the bowel movement these would be signs to seek veterinary care.

Metamucil may help some but I would keep her dose very small like around 1 teaspoon twice a day. You could also try to just add a small amount of canned plain pumpkin instead of the Metamucil. I would also consider trying to add in a probiotic and a sensitive stomach diet. I like a few different types of probiotics - propectalin, vetriscience probiotic chews, purina pro plan fortiflora or proviable. If you decide to switch her food, I would transition her from the old food to the new food very slowly over a 2 weeks period. If you haven't had her examined by a vet I would strongly recommend to have her looked at. There are a lot of things that can also cause loose stools like parasites, food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial infections, giardia, and much more. Sometimes increasing the fiber in the diet can help the anal glands express on their own, so supplementing the diet with Metamucil could help. I typically recommend starting at 1/2 to 1 tsp of unflavored Metamucil per day.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. We normally start dogs on 2 tablespoons a day and increase or decrease based on response, so if he seems to be doing well on 2 tablespoons then I would continue this dose.

Hi, the best course of action is trying to understand the cause of constipation and address it. If it is not possible, try to help making sure that Maddy is hydrated and that she has a reasonable amount of fibre in her diet. In terms of ailments you can use, what is safe in dogs to use is lactulose, you could start with a small dose such as 2.5 ml twice a day and if it seems to help try to reduce it to once a day. Miralax is a very gentle, easy to give treatment for constipation, available over the counter at any pharmacy. The dose of Miralax is 1 tsp per 50 lbs mixed in with food once a day. You can also add a tablespoon of vegetable or olive oil to his food once daily, or add a couple of teaspoons of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) to his food daily. If he is severely constipated right now, I recommend you get him in to see your vet to be debulked.
