My puppy has roundworm. How to prevent it spreading to my young child?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Koga has roundworms. The eggs of intestinal parasites are shed in his poop not from his fur. You need to clean up the stools as soon as he goes to prevent contamination of the environment. Your son should be ok as long as he isn’t eating the poop. Just make sure to wash his hands after he plays with the puppy or before he eats. You will need to treat Koga twice (3 weeks apart) and the you should be all set. Good luck and kisses to Koga!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Your children would have to get Max's stool in their mouths or mucous membranes. As long as you pick up his stool and cleaning up after any accidents that usually prevents any infections in children. Kids can also get it from eating contaminated dirt. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! Cooper could get the roundwroms from your friends dog if he eats her stool. Hopefully that won't happen. If your puppy is on heartworm prevention then he is also getting dewormed as well. I hope this helps!

I certainly understand being concerned! Yes, it is possible that your grandson can get roundworms, but there are measures you can take to prevent that from happening. The eggs are found in the feces, and humans can get them from contact with infected feces and contaminated soil. If Stella has had some accidents in the house, there could be fecal matter in the carpet, and the eggs can survive for some time in the environment. I would make sure to clean up any poop in the home and yard, and disinfect the carpet where she had accidents. Practice proper hygiene, always using gloves to clean up any feces and washing your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you practice good hygiene, don't allow your grandson to touch the feces or ingest contaminated soil, and disinfect the carpet, that will significantly decrease any risk of transmission. Poor pup. Roundworms are very common in puppies, because they can get infected while still in their mothers tummy (in utero) and through the mother's milk. To treat roundworms Harry just needs a broad spectrum dewormer like Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole. 1 treatment given today and then again in 2 weeks. To prevent roundworm infestations in the future Harry needs to get on a monthly heartworm preventative, which has natural intestinal dewormer in it as well. Harry will need to see a vet to get a prescription for the heartworm preventative (i.e. Heartgard, Trifexis, etc), but the intestinal dewormer can be purchased through your local pet store. Your pup should be just fine once he is treated. : )

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Unless she has feces on her hair and if she defecates when around other dogs, she will not pass on the worms just by playing with other dogs. However, you cannot say for sure whether or not she has microscopic eggs stuck to her fur or if she will defecate around the other dogs. I would play it safe and finish off the deworming medication and recheck the stool in 7 days (from starting the medication) before socializing her with any other dogs. If she defecates and you pick it up, there is no way to tell if you got every microscopic egg off the ground. If she does defecate outside, it is recommended to remove the top 8 inches of soil from the area to ensure you have removed all eggs. I would also recommend regularly cleaning her bedding so that she does not re-infect herself and that you are using a bleach solution (3 cups bleach to 1 cup water) to spray surfaces down.
