My dog is itching after vaccines. Is this normal for chihuahuas?

Hello. It is possible that your puppy is having a reaction. If it is not terribly bad, it should subside in 24 hours. However, if it is getting worse, your puppy develops diarrhea or any difficulty breathing, please see your vet. And, you might want to consider having your vet administer the next set of shots. A swollen face, swollen lips, red eyes, severe itching or difficulty breathing may all be symptoms of a vaccine reaction. An antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can be given but only under the advice of your veterinary. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending you medicate her in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If her symptoms persist or worsen, have her examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. Your dog should get an antihistamine before the vaccination. You should ask your vet about giving him a diphenhydramine , or chlorpheniramine injection about an hour before getting the vaccination. This should avoid the reaction or at least reduce the impact. Your veterinarian should have these injectables available.

Poor Mukku! This could be an allergic reaction the vaccine or it could be unrelated. Due to the potential for a reaction, I recommend to have him checked by his veterinarian. He may get an anti-inflammatory as well as a medicated shampoo. I hope he starts feeling better quickly!

Hi there. Allergies can be very challenging and frustrating. Have you tried any prescription hypoallergenic diets? Minimum of 10 weeks with NO other treats etc? If not I would discuss that option with your veterinarian. Otherwise I may consider trying cytoplasm injections. I have been very pleased with my toughest allergy patients on this medication. From your question, it sounds like you recently bathed Chico in a shampoo that you are concerned has caused an allergic reaction. Since an oatmeal bath and Benadryl seemed to resolve the areas, it may indeed have been an allergic reaction. Unfortunately, sometimes when the body has started an allergic reaction, it will take a number of days of treatment to complete resolve, so I would repeat your treatment for a few days. If the areas are looking worse, Chico is not feeling well, not eating or seems to have any swelling involving the head and neck that could cause problems with his breathing, please seek veterinary care immediately.
