My 6-month-old puppy is pregnant. Will she raise her puppies?

It can be up to 4 hours in between puppies. They need the break so they do not get exhausted. If she is heavily contacting and trying hard to push a pup out with no luck after 39 minutes then she needs medical attention. If there is a black or brown discharge then she needs medical help. The best thing to do is put her in a quiet dim place to let her rest and have the puppies. Check on her about every 30 minutes. Your bitch may not act like the typical mother because she is way too young to have a litter, and her mothering instincts may not have kicked in yet. Have a box, lined with warm, soft twels ready. As each pup is born, the mom should cut the cord by "scissoring" it with her teeth. If she does not, tie dental floss about four inches from the pup, and at five inches from the pup. Scrape the section in between the ties with a butter knife (you can go back and forth) until the piece of cord is shredded (shredding instead of cutting "seals" the cord better)As soon aa the cord is cut (or before, if you have to do it yourself), clear the pup's airway with a baby bulb syringe--mouth first, then nose. Finally, rub the pup vigorously with a thick towel to get it mostly dry. Put it in the towel-lined box, Have a low-watt light clipped to one side of the box so the puppy can move into and out of the warm spot on the floor of the box. Watch to be sure a placenta is delivered for each puppy. Finally, between births you can give the pup or puppies to the mom to nurse, but remove them if another pup starts to come so she doesn't hurt them accidently. call the vet for breech (feet first) birth, retained placentas, excessive bleeding, or other concerns.

Hi. So dogs are really good at handling this very well on their own, but do sometimes need our assistance. The pregnancy lasts 63 days on average. The main points I would make are... 1: get her deformed and a fecal checked 2: no vaccines while pregnant 3. Get x-rays to get a rough number of babies. They show up on x-rays at approx 45 days 4. When it comes time, if she ACTIVELY pushes for more then 20-30 min without any progress, she needs to go to ER for c-section or assistance. There may be breaks between puppies for awhile, and that's OK as long as there isn't active pushing without progress. 5- bring her and babies on for example after born 6- babies get first shots at 6-8weeks old 7- she can be spayed after the babies are weaned. Hello. As long as she is not actively pushing / straining & seems content to care for her new family, she may just need to rest for several hours. It is also not unusual for there to be a 24 hour gap between starting labor & delivering the last puppy. I will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between an involuting uterus ( one that is shrinking down ) & the perception that there may be still some puppies. The uterus can be quite "lumpy" at this early stage. If she remains comfortable & there is no excessive drainage ( there will be the normal greenish discharge called lochia ), then I would not be too concerned. But if you are still concerned in 3-4 hours, or she starts pushing with no deliveries after 30 minutes, do see your veterinarian for further evaluation. Hello, congratulations on your coming pups. You should check her once every hour or so. If she is going into labor, then you will see active abdominal contractions, and the puppies should be born within 2 hours. If 2 hours of contractions have passed, then contact your emergency veterinarian to discuss with them if you should bring her in to be evaluated. Otherwise, make sure she has a warm area that she can easily access to have her puppies. Once the puppies are born, you can help her clean the puppies and make sure they can all nurse. If he is much larger than her then she may have a hard time passing the puppies as they can be too larger. They are pregnant for 58-63 days. Around day 45 you can get an X-ray to get an estimate of how many to expect and to make sure none are to large to pass. It is not ideal that she has bred so young but mainly the concern is the sie is the puppies

Dogs typically have their puppies anywhere from 57-65 days after mating. So if she's only six weeks along, she's nowhere near time to whelp yet. Minor temperature fluctuations are normal - we don't consider it a true pre-whelping temperature drop unless her temp goes below 98 degrees.
