My pregnant dog won't eat much. How can I get her appetite back up?

Just keep offering a variety of things to see what she likes best. It may be a good idea to have her examined by a vet to see if she is sick, anemic, low blood pressure, or having any other medical issues with her pregnancy.

I'm sorry that Ginger is not feeling well. It is concerning that she is not eating well for the past two days. You could try to feed her a mixture of plain boiled chicken and plain white rice to see if this will stimulate her appetite. If she does start eating it and there are no other signs of illness, then I would start to transition her to a puppy food. She should eat puppy food throughout her pregnancy and while she's nursing the puppies. If she still refuses to eat, i do think you need to take her to the veterinarian. They will most likely recommend doing some blood testing and possibly x-rays of her abdomen as there are many things that can cause a decreased appetite. I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to have her examined. It's possible that she has gastroenteritis, an infection, or any number of other diseases. Your veterinarian can take her temperature and may recommend an ultrasound to check the puppies' heart rates and make sure they are not in distress. I typically recommend feeding a high quality puppy food to pregnant dogs, but your veterinarian might recommend trying a higher calorie therapeutic diet. Good luck!

I would recommend trying boiled chicken and white rice. However if she will not eat it could be a sign of an issue with her pregnancy. The uterus and fetus can become infected and cause severe anorexia I would make sure you are weighing her every few days to make sure she is not loosing weight if she continues to. It eat or looses weight I recommend taking her to a veterinarian for evaluation.

This is not a good idea. Chicken and steak will not be a balanced diet for your dog and the puppies may not develop properly. Try feeding her some good quality puppy food, warm it up in the microwave, canned puppy food may be even better. If she does not eat it, do NOT feed her the chicken and steak as she will then wait always until you feed her that kind of food. It is not a problem if she does not eat for a day, but the next day she will likely be hungry enough to eat the puppy food. Now is the time when the puppies grow exponentially and therefore it is very important to feed her proper dog, best, puppy food.

At six weeks of pregnancy, she should be getting a third more food than her normal amount; for example, if she was getting 1 cup of food twice a day before she was pregnant, she should be getting 1.3 cups of food twice a day. It's important to stop giving her puppy food 10 days before her expected whelping date, and then I would feed her an adult formulated food. She can go back on the puppy food after she gives birth to the puppies. A dog's normal pregnancy is 58-68 days, so I would stop the puppy food when she is 48 days pregnant.

Poor girl. 5 days is a long time for a pregnant dog to go without eating. At this point the best advise is to take her in to your vet to get looked at. Something could be wrong with the pregnancy and she needs to get tested to determine if an infection is present or what the case may be, and then treated. I hope your girl Kiki is going to be ok.
