My dog is pregnant and has fleas. How will they affect her puppies?

Yes, Capstar (nitenpyram) is labeled as being safe for use in pregnant and lactating dogs. Just remember that Capstar will quickly kill adult fleas, but will not provide lasting flea prevention against hatching flea eggs or maturing flea larvae. K9 Advantix II is also labeled as being safe for pregnant and lactating dogs and will provide month-long flea prevention, but you would need to closely monitor the puppies to keep them away from the areas of medicine application. No, this is not safe to use on your dog. Revolution is a spot on flea treatment, and it is approved and safe for use in pregnant dogs. You can get this from your vet's office. I'd recommend using Capstar as well. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and is also safe to give pregnant dogs. Give her the Capstar to kill the fleas, and follow up with the Revolution. You will have to disinfect the environment as well. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Frontline and Revolution are safe for use in pregnant dogs. If you're already using a heartworm preventative with ivermectin, please continue to do so as it is safe for both the mom and pups and will help prevent her from passing parasites to the pups. And if they is due for vaccinations, getting them while she is pregnant will boost her and the pups immunity to disease. For tapeworms, Drontal is safe to use during all life stages, including pregnancy.

Poor girl. I would recommend contacting a mobile vet to see if they can lure her away from the puppies to get them taken care of. A topical vet approved product may be able to be used on the puppies, off label, to help remove the fleas. Either that or a quick dawn detergent bath (if they are old enough to maintain their body temperature) and making sure not to get it in their eyes. Mama dog also needs to be treated for fleas with a product from your vet, as over the counters are typically topical and not recommended. The vet also may need to give her a mild oral sedative (i.e. trazodone) to help calm Emily enough to be able to treat everyone safely. It's important to get this done quickly to prevent severe blood loss anemia that can happen if the fleas are continued to have their blood meal on them. You need to treat the puppy for fleas. You can use certain flea treatments on pregnant cats such as Revolution or Advantage flea treatment. I would use one of those on Snowbell. You will need to disinfect the environment as well to get rid of all the fleas. Make sure the puppy gets his vaccines, and once Snowbell has her kittens and they are weaned, vaccinate her. I like to use a flea comb dipped in a solution of dawn dish soap to comb off the fleas. That is safe and dipping the flea comb in the soapy water will kill the fleas. I would comb them daily and manually remove the ticks. All puppies get intestinal parasites from their Mom. Giving nemex every two weeks once they are four weeks old will take care of them. You can apply Advantage to the mother and place a drop on each pup when they are six weeks old to kill the fleas.
