My pregnant dog has discharge and won't eat. Is labor coming?

This is not normal, and Asuna has to see a vet immediately. This discharge can be a sign of a complication in her pregnancy, and she needs veterinary attention right away. Please take her into an ER vet; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. It is quite common for dogs to become anorexic in the 24 hours prior to whelping. Be sure that Sweetie has a whelping box ready, or a quiet area in your home with plenty of soft towels and blankets, but keep in mind that these blankets may get ruined during delivery! In the 24 hours prior to whelping, some dogs may also become more restless and may hide or try to be alone. I hope that all goes well!

This is likely the dissolution of the mucus plug. She will give birth within the next week and should start lactating soon. If the discharge looks like pus or has a bad smell. you need to take her to your veterinarian right away for an exam. Your vet can also take an x-ray and tell you how many puppies to expect so you know when she is done giving birth.

A moderate amount of clear, sticky vaginal discharge is normal for a pregnant dog, especially close to delivery of the puppies. The increased hormone levels cause an increase in the lubrication produced by the vagina. As long as there is no evidence of dark green color in the discharge, a milky or creamy appearance or foul odor no treatment is needed. It does not mean that she will give birth earlier.

Unfortunately it is difficult to say when exactly her delivery date is. Even with an ultrasound or X-ray, you cannot say for sure. If her belly looks big and rounded then I would say she is closer - probably expecting around the 1-2 weeks. Again, I cannot guarantee that because it all depends on how big the dad was as well. Just continue to give her lots of love and if you are okay with having the pups inside your house or in a safe area of your garage I would put some soft blankets or even a large plastic bin or kiddy pool with a lot of bedding in it now so she can get use to it. It isn’t guaranteed that she will choose to use that area but hopefully she will! Also, I would start transitioning (mix old food with new food for 7-10 days) her to puppy food as she will need the extra calories and nitrition while nursing her pups. I hope this helps.

Normally, the "due date" for a pregnant dog is anywhere from 57-63 days after mating. If your girl is 59 days pregnant, she is within this range so she may be getting ready to go into labor - pregnant females will often refuse food for the last day or so before having their puppies, and may also act restless or clingy. You can take her temperature with a rectal thermometer if you are comfortable doing this - if it's lower than 99 degrees, chances are good that she will be going into labor within the next 24 hours.

Hello. This very well can be the first stages of labor, & this can last 24-36 hours. Once you start to see her having contractions ( can see her actually pushing ), she should start having puppies in the first 15-30 minutes after observing this. If she starts pushing & no puppies are delivered within an hour, you may need to have her evaluated by your veterinarian, but it sounds like she is progressing nicely for now.
