Pregnant dog bloated, no puppy movement. Should I call the vet?

From what you are describing it sounds like Asuna is experiencing some bloating, which can be a normal part of pregnancy. If she is feeling well and has not displaying any other symptoms I would not be overly concerned. However, it would be a great idea to have the pregnancy confirmed by a veterinarian as well as ask the vet to examine Asuna and ensure everything is processing well with her and the puppies. Homegirl definitely has fairly prominent abdominal distension! Dogs' gestation typically lasts 62-65 days, so I suppose it is still possible that she may be nearing the end of a pregnancy. However, if she has not had any changes to her mammary glands (I did not see any noticeable change in the photo from March), it is unlikely that she is approaching the end of a pregnancy. Abdominal distension this prominent in the absence of pregnancy could be due to fluid (a sign of liver failure, right sided heart failure, infection, etc.) or a benign or malignant mass, all of which can be quite severe. At this point, Homegirl should be examined by a vet urgently to evaluate her overall health and may need to take x-rays or perform an ultrasound of her abdomen to get to the bottom of this issue. I would not worry unless she isn't acting normal or unless she is showing signs of distress or contractions. If there is signs of contractions or distress and puppies still aren't coming then you will want your vet to take a look at her. Your vet will be able to tell whether or not she needs a C-section or just some meds to help increased the contractility to help her have her pups. I hope this helps!

You will not be able to feel the puppies heartbeat as they are too deep inside the mother. You can generally expect to feel movement from a large litter earlier than a smaller litter. You may begin to feel movement up to two weeks before the due date. If she only has a single puppy however you may not be able to feel much movement as the puppy will be deep inside her body. An ultrasound can detect the puppies heartbeat after 22 days from the breeding and a radiograph can see the skeletons 45 days after the breeding. Generally you cannot feel the puppies moving until the last one to two weeks of the pregnancy and at this point in her pregnancy, you are not expected to be able to feel the puppies. Death of the puppies unfortunately is a potential cause and an abdominal ultrasound will quickly be able to detect if the puppies are alive or not if you are worried. Go ahead and start limiting her jumping. As she gets larger she will get more uncomfortable and the jumping is not likely good for her. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Girttie's belly is huge and she is producing milk she is very likely pregnant. If he belly wasn't big and she was producing milk she could be experiencing a false pregnancy. I would count back to when she was in heat. Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days. They do have a temperature drop most of the time BUT not always. It usually drops below 99 a few hours to 1 day before the start of labor. Dogs can start to product milk up to a week to a few days before labor. It is hard to feel the puppies move. If you want to confirm the number of puppies make a Vet appointment to have an X-ray taken to count the skeletons. Since she is so small it is good to talk to your Vet in case you run in to complications where you may require their help with delivery or a C-section. My guess is that she is due very soon, less than 7 days. I hope this helps!

Each dog carries a pregnancy differently, and some dogs will have larger stomachs that others. There is no specific size a pregnant dog's belly should be, so as long as Snow is eating and drinking, isn't losing weight, and isn't very lethargic, I wouldn't be concerned about the size of her belly. I'm not sure if you have had her seen by a vet to confirm her pregnancy, but I do recommend having her seen by a vet if you have not. Best of luck!
