What's causing my pit bull puppy's ear rash if she's not bothered?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Minor rashes like this on Chloe are often due to allergies, which is why it responds to benedryl. You can continue to give the antihistamine which will help. Wiping her down with a wet wash cloth when she comes in from the outside will also help to remove allergens from the outside. He could have an infection and/or allergic dermatitis. Since this has been going on for a couple years, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or anti-inflammatory to treat. He may need to stay on an anti-histamine long term if it is related to allergies.

Thanks for using PetCoach! This is pretty classic for good old allergies. Pit bulls are notorious for having environmental allergies. You can start by trying some Benedryl (see link below), omega 3 fatty acids (about 2,000 mg fish oil per day) and Duoxo Calm shampoo. This combo seems to work well for dogs with mild-moderate, occasional allergies. Unfortunately, many of my pitties with allergies end up needing temeril - P, apoquel, cytopoint, or other medications to control their itching. Trooper could have a form of mange that isn't contagious to other dogs, known as demodex. Another possibility is a condition called vasculitis, which can compromise blood flow to the edges and point of the ear, and irritate them. Vasculitis can be caused by tick-borne diseases, as well as immune-mediated diseases. Another possibility is a disease called pemphigus. All of these problems have very different treatments, so it's important to get Trooper checked by a vet so that the appropriate treatment can be prescribed.

This is a skin infection. Medicated baths sometimes help but fair skinned dogs are more prone to allergies and skin infections. To clear this up she probably needs oral antibiotics for several weeks. This is not contagious. Some dogs develop this when laying in a moist area, or on something irritating. Please take her for a veterinary exam to confirm the problem and get medication to treat this.
