My diabetic dog is picky. What food or homemade options can I offer?

I would recommend finding a limited ingredient diet that doesn't contain any of those ingredients, and feeding that. If you can find one that's fairly high in fiber and relatively low in carbohydrates, that would be ideal - but if not, you should still be able to get his glucose regulated as long as you're following your veterinarian's instructions. For diabetic dogs, the specific diet you choose to feed doesn't matter all that much, as long as you keep it consistent and control the amount of calories he's getting each day. I would definitely recommend talking to the veterinarian who is treating his diabetes about what he/she suggests, and make sure to inform your vet about any planned diet changes, since changing the diet can affect the amount of insulin he needs.

As I'm sure you are aware, it's very important for diabetic dogs to eat. If May is just eating dry dog food, you can try to get her to eat by mixing in canned dog food with her dry food. Make sure that her dry food is completely coated with the canned food. You can also put some boiled and shredded white meat chicken (no bones) or scrambled eggs (no seasoning, milk, cheese, salt, pepper, just the eggs) in with her food. You can also add a tablespoon of low sodium chicken broth in with her dry food and mix it together. If she still refuses to eat, you will need to take her into the vet as there may be a diabetic related complication causing her to not eat.

There is no best answer to your question! Diabetic dogs often do well on diets low in carbohydrates and high in fiber as this will help to regulate their blood glucose throughout the day. The Wellness senior is not quite as high in fiber as w/d. These diets are similar in fat content, which can play a role in pancreatitis. I would try feeding the Wellness senior diet and nothing else for 1 week and recheck with your vet. Signs that this is an appropriate diet for Snickers would be that he has no vomiting or diarrhea, eats it well, and his blood glucose curve is stable at his current dose of insulin. It is important to check glucose curves after starting a different diet since it may change his insulin needs.

What Dr Ana was referring to is that the disease that Bailey was recently diagnosed with--diabetes insipidus--is NOT going to be affected to any significant extent by Bailey's diet. It is very important for diabetics to eat a consistent diet each day in order to match insulin prescription to energy intake and demand. You should discuss your concerns with your vet as a new diet may require adjustment of her insulin requirement but if they will not eat the diabetic food then an acceptable, tasty alternative (preferably high protein and low carbohydrate) should be found as soon as possible!
