My dog has bladder issues. Can Petco prescribe Proin for her?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 20 lbs

I would like to get my dog evaluated to see if she would be eligible to be prescribed Proin, the medication that tightens the bladder sphincter muscle. Is Petco able to assist?

Hi there!
I'm sorry to hear about Brittany's troubles.
I am not sure if Petco has full veterinary services, as that is the appropriate avenue for eventually prescribing proin.
When I see a dog for urinary incontinence issues, I start with a full blood and urine panel and a culture of the urine to rule out infections or any other health issues.
I also will check the urinary bladder with an ultrasound and take a few xrays to make sure we don't have bladder or kidney stones, or cancer of some kind causing the incontinence.
Once I've ruled out any other causes, and I know I need to use proin, I check a blood pressure to make sure that's normal too (because proin can cause side effecrs with that).
I'll start a patient on the recommended dose and then recheck to make sure it's working. A couple weela after starting I'll usually check blood pressure, and then once more 4-6 weeks out. At that time I'll often check a mini panel and just double check some blood values. If all is well, i will just do periodic blood pressure checks throughout the year and labwork as needed for senior pets.

She needs to be examined by a veterinarian. She needs to have her urine checked for infection (which is very common when dogs leak urine). Make an appointment with a local veterinarian.

Hi there. PPA (phenylpropanolamine, or Proin) is a very common first-line choice for urinary incontinence in female dogs, and often works well in my experience. So it's likely that this could be a good option for Sofi, depending on whether she has any other underlying health issues to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription over the internet, as legally this has to be done by a veterinarian who has physically examined your pet. So I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian in your area to bring Sofi in for an exam. He/she can discuss medication options for urinary incontinence with you, and should be able to provide a prescription for whatever medication the two of you decide to try.

My dog had a UTI, but still has incontinence. Is Proin an option?

Hello, thank you for your question about Isla. Proin is a potential option for treating urinary incontinence. I would recommend ensuring that Isla has completely cleared the UTI as incontinence can also be indicative of a residual UTI. If the infection has been cleared fully, I would recommend discussing the use of Proin with your veterinarian. My spayed dog leaks urine, Proin isn't working. What can I do?

I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. My senior dog has frequent urination & accidents. What meds help?

You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs. Is my dog's increased water intake on Proin a cause for concern?

That is not a common side effect of the medication. I do recommend a veterinary exam and lab tests to determine if she has a urinary infection, kidney problem or even diabetes or other metabolic problem that can change the amount of drinking and urination. Once they get a reason then they can start treatment that could consist of a diet change and/or other medications. My dog is incontinent, but the vet found nothing wrong. Why?

Hello. I am so sorry that no one has addressed your question earlier. Your veterinarians have done an excellent work-up to rule out any underlying conditions or issues so far, but have they been able to rule out the possibility that Cali has ectopic ureters or something else congenital like urethral hypoplasia or just plain congenital incontinence? Medically, you might discuss the use of Incurin ( estriol ) either by itself or added to the Proin. If there is no response to either/both of these together, there is some literature that indicates that GnRH ( gonadotropin releasing hormone ) may be effective. If Cali remains medically unresponsive, then there is a surgical procedure to implant a hydraulic urethral occluder. Your veterinarian will probably not be able to do this, but if you are near a veterinary teaching hospital, that would be a good place to have this done. Your veterinarian can research this for you.
