Is permethrin safe for dog tick prevention during deep woods hikes?

Hello! You should be able to use both Frontline and either a Preventic or Seresto collar, but only one collar. There should not be any interactions between any of the medications. I think using two preventives for hiking in the northeastern US is an excellent idea to prevent ticks and tick borne disease. I would also recommend looking into getting Winston vaccinated for Lyme disease as an additional precaution. I hope this is helpful! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. I prefer to use a topical liquid for flea and tick prevention. The reasoning being this will prevent the spread of disease from ticks. All oral products require the patient to actually be bitten by the tick for the prevention to work. The bite is how tick born diseases are spread. My favorite product is Vectra 3D. It also repels mosquitoes so it works in conjunction with your dog's monthly heartworm prevention. This is a huge benefit. It is also effective against lice, certain types of mites and biting flies. Unfortunately, natural products are not going to effective. The diseases spread by ectoparasites can be a serious threat to your pet. A lot of times there are manufacturer rebates available when you purchase Vectra 3D. I hope this information helps!

Both of those should be safe if applied to the outer coat. However, they will not effectively prevent fleas and ticks. The best way to prevent external parasites is by using a product from your vet. There are newer products like Bravecto and Nexgard that are oral tablets that prevent fleas/ticks for 30 days. This is the best way to keep your dog parasite free.

Most of veterinarians will avoid using two topical medications, in the hopes of avoiding interactions or side effects. Each product has different chemicals and if you use two topical products, you want to be sure they are safe together. Have you thought about using something like a Preventic collar? This collar works very well for ticks. You put it on Benji when you are going to areas that have ticks. When you are no longer worried about ticks, you store the collar in a baggie in a cool, dark place. It will remain effective for 6-8 months. Tick prevention can be achieved in many different ways. There are TONS of products available on the market, some of which are prescription only and others that are over-the-counter. You might ask ten different vets and get ten different answers as to which product is best, and this is sometimes due to the fact that certain products work better in certain geographic regions. For instance, where I practice in western Pennsylvania, we find that the Seresto Collar provides the best protection, particularly against deer ticks. However, this is not what was routinely recommended further down south. The recommendations will likely be different in the UK as well, so asking some local vets their opinion would be a valuable tool for you. Just in general, there are three different formulations for protection: topical, collar, and oral medication. Any of them are capable of getting the job done, just some are better than others in particular instances. In terms of humans, ticks can definitely infect us with diseases. Even though fleas and ticks need to bite a pet in order for Nexgard to work, it kills the parasites quickly enough to prevent them from causing either flea infestations or from transmitting different tick-borne diseases. However, no product is 100% effective. I think you're being very proactive in looking for repellant options to protect Milo on your upcoming camping trip! Topical products like K9 Advantix II (available over the counter) or Vectra 3D (prescription-based), or Seresto collars (available over the counter) are all labeled to repel new ticks and Advantix II also repels mosquitoes. To my knowledge, no products actually repel fleas. Don't worry - they all kill fleas quickly, so an infestation isn't a concern. I often recommend using any one of these products in conjunction with Nexgard if a high-risk situation is needed. However, since I don't know Milo's medical history, I strongly recommend first calling his vet to confirm that it's safe for him to use one of these products. I like the Seresto collar. It is effective and one collar lasts 8 months. It can even get wet! It has different medication than those other products you mentioned and since it is very slow release he may not react to it.
