Painless nipple discharge in unspayed female dog: What's the cause?

It looks like Roxy could have a mass and/or an infection. She needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can do a needle aspirate and/or biopsy to help diagnose and then treat. It may need to be removed.

Discharge from a nipple can be due to a variety of reasons, including milk production (if not spayed), a bacterial infection, a clogged duct, or another underlying issue. if it is bothering her or you are concerned, I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine if there is something that needs to be addressed. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! It sounds like Roxy is experiencing a pseudopregnancy or a false pregnancy. It is not wrong to have her seen by your Vet to rule out any other medical conditions and to rule out an infected uterus (pyometra). I've attached a link for more information. The black dots are likely to be blackheads due to fat content in the are. The fact that nipples are producing milk may be due to a false pregnancy which is due to an hormonal imbalance. This problem is usually self limiting but if lasting more than 24 hours a check up would be required as specific medication can be prescribed.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It could be a false pregnancy, true pregnancy, or a pyometra (though fluid from the nipples is less likely with this issue). The only way to know for sure is to have her examined by a vet. As long as her appetite and behavior are normal, I don't think you need to rush her in.

Hello. This is probably benign mammary hyperplasia, but you do want to have this looked at, especially if she has been spayed. If she has not been spayed & has never been with a male dog, then this could be related to a false pregnancy. Also, has she been in contact with anyone who is on hormone replacement therapy? Sometimes, this can rub off on a pet & cause mammary enlargement. If no outside cause can be found, then have her spayed if that has not already been done, & submit a biopsy to see exactly what is going on with the tissue.
