My dog is in pain. Can an online vet prescribe medication remotely?

Hello. I am so sorry, but veterinarians are prohibited from prescribing over the internet. If Auggie has been seen recently by your veterinarian ( in the past 6 months ), they may agree to prescribe a short course of anti-inflammatory medications until he can receive a proper examination. All you can do is ask. Otherwise, try to keep him quiet & do not let him jump. Even after he is started on pain medication, you will need to curtail his activity so that he does not further injure his joints. The law requires a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship and to have this an in person examination of the pet is needed to prescribe medications. We are here to provide advice and support. Unfortunately there are no over the counter pain medications that are safe for dogs. I would recommend discussing with your veterinarian if there is something you can switch him to that is more cost effective and still approved for use in dogs. You can also check into online pharmacies or box stores (such as Costco) that offer pet medications at a lower price.

Unfortunately in order to prescribe medication we are legally required to have examined the animal to establish a “vet-client-patient relationship” so we cannot call in prescriptions with online consults. You will need to touch base with your regular vet to get Kylo’s medication.

Unfortunately it's illegal for me to tell you as well since I can't see Linda in person. Also, I very strongly caution you about giving her old pain meds. They may be expired, but also she is an older dog and she could have a health condition that means taking steroids is not recommended at all. You could accidentally do serious harm. She will need to see a vet to get more pain medications. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Unfortunately we cannot give a prescription for these medications, it's illegal for us to do so without seeing him in person. You will need a prescription to get these medications, and in order to get that, you will have to take him into the vet. I'd make an appointment for him to be seen in the next couple of days. You will need to take your dog to a vet for a pain medication. We can't, by law, prescribe or recommend a pain medication without examining your dog. If your dog has a burn, he may need an antibiotic, too. Please call your vet and schedule an appointment. Hope he recovers quickly.
