How long for older dog to adjust to new puppy after a loss?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Honey is having some trouble adjusting to her new home. Hopefully you brought with you a few familiar items with you from Honey's previous home, like a blanket or bed. Make sure she has access to that. Offer her plenty of cuddles and attention. Offer her usual food and treats from your hand, to help gain her trust. If Honey is used to a crate, make sure you use a similar one in your home. Place her bed in there and she should quickly be drawn to it as a place of comfort and safety. I'd also look into a product called Adaptil, which is a canine pheromone that can help reduce stress and anxiety in new environments. Give it time. It is a difficult phase for Honey right now, but she should gradually get used to her new home and learn to love her new family, if you are patient, consistent, and offer her a nurturing loving home! Time will be your best friend here. Dogs do not have memories like we do, and after about a week she should be back to her old self again. I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! You should think seriously about this before (or if) you decide to get another puppy. By the way, six weeks is too early to separate a puppy from its litter. They learn such important lessons as bite inhibitions from their littermates. I would suggest taking Luna to an obedience course so she can get used to being around other dogs . . . and so you can see how she responds to them. Finally, if you are deterined to get another dog, do not just bring the dog home, It will make Luna feel territorial against the "intruder." Instead, bring Luna to a neutral place (where she's never been before) and introduce them there. That way, Luna will feel as if she is bringing her new buddy home instead of feeling that the puppy is something to defend against. Good luck!

This can be a difficult question to answer because it will vary from dog to dog. The dog's personality will determine whether or not they adjust well to a new housemate. It does not necessarily matter whether the dog is older or younger. Some things you can do in the home when introducing new dogs are keeping the interactions very limited and making sure the dogs are under supervision the whole time they are getting to know each other. Also avoid feeding the dogs or giving them treats while they are together as this can sometimes cause aggressive behavior. It sounds as if Coco may be a bit stressed out by the new puppy. Giving her some time on her own to relax and settle in with the changes is best. You can try spending some more one on one time together by offering a favorite treat, playing with a favorite toy, or just petting and grooming her without your other dogs present. Making sure each dog has some personal time as well as places they can rest such as their own bed, room, etc as well as making sure there are extra food and water bowls can help reduce stress and prevent tension between all three dogs.

It may take some time for her to accept him. If she is being aggressive toward him than you should not allow them to be together unsupervised, espeically around feeding time or any toys/bones that she may protect. Give her extra attention, praise, and treats while the puppy is around so she knows he is not there to replace her. You could also try an Adaptil collar or diffuser and see if that helps. If she doesn't start accepting him than you could talk to your vet about trying an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone and see if that helps.

IT can be common that when a new puppy enters the house the older dog might have a change in behavior. Most of the time this is corrected with just time. Molly will get use to the puppy being a around and will start to become more social again. I recommend making sure Molly does have an area she can go with out the puppy to relax and paying her some one on one time to make sure she is getting attention. hope that helps
