My old Chihuahua won't eat or drink. When should I see a vet?

It's very concerning that Chewy has not eaten or drank since Sunday. That tells me he is sick, but without seeing him in person, I can't say what is wrong with him. I strongly urge you to take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Poor Fudge! I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

If very young small puppies go too long between meals, their blood sugar can drop too low. This results in a weak lethargic puppy that will be less interested in eating and drinking. You can try using a supplement known as NutriCal to keep her blood sugar up. If she seems unresponsive, place karo syrup on her gums and seek immediate veterinary care. Otherwise, leave puppy food available at all times so that she does not need to go extended periods between meals. Continue this until she is around 4 months of age. As far as another puppy food option, I would use a small or tiny breed formula from Purina or Hills. These are trustworthy companies with products backed by extensive research. You can add warm water to the dry kibble, mix canned and dry food or just offer canned. You may have to try different combinations to see what she likes. I hope this information helps!

Sophie is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe she is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe she is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking her to the vet as soon as possible in order to get her checked, if she doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with her.

I am sorry to hear about your chihuahua. Because of her age and her symptoms (lethargy and decreased appetite) I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian. We can certainly see medical problems in older dogs that can cause these symptoms such as kidney disease, infections, liver disease, and more. An exam by your vet and some bloodwork may help to be sure there isn't a treatable medical issue. If there are no abnormalities found, then they may recommend some over the counter products that can help with anxiety such as Adaptil which is a pheremone product available as a plug-in or collar, Zylkene or Composure which are calming supplements, a thundershirt which is a compression vest that calms some dogs. And in some cases prescription strength medication may be necesssary from your veterinarian.

I am sorry that Chico is not feeling well. You could try feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice incase he is more interested in that than his dog food. However, it is possible he is not eating if he is nauseous from being dizzy. Dogs can have vestibular disease, where they loose the balance, and this can make them nauseous and not want to eat. I would recommend keeping him comfortable in a warm safe place until you can get him to the vet in the morning. However, if at any time you think he is having trouble breathing or in pain I would recommend a 24 hour emergency clinic this evening. Hope the feels better soon
