Why is my old dog suddenly losing use of one side and falling over?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My 14 yr old Chi has "spells" where she will suddenly and with no causal incidents, suddenly lose all use of one side of her body. She will try to move, but falls over. Eyes are normal and she doesn't appear to be in pain. Stroke? Seizure?

This indeed may be a neurological condition, likely caused by a brain lesion or neural lesion. Sophie will need a neurological exam by a vet or even a veterinary neurologist. This could also be caused by pain. Best to make an appointment with your vet for an exam.
