Is my old dog's heavy breathing, weight loss, and mobility normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | 8 years and 7 months old

I am not sure if my dog is sick or just getting old ? He is breathing heavily and can't walk and go up and down stairs and he is skinny than usual and his nose is dry he has diarrhea

Hello! Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am hear your concern about Chance's health - it can certainly be scary as our pets start to age. From the picture above, although a little blurry, I am not as concerned about is dry nose (this can be normal) however, it looks as though he may have lesions below his eye on his cheek and below his nose as well?? You can certainly try some pure aloe gel on his nose to see if that helps. If he has not had a visit to his regular veterinarian in awhile it may be time to have him get a check up. Unexplained weight loss (the appearance of being skinny), difficulty going up/down stairs and heavier breathing can be indications that Chance is experiencing pain or discomfort. A check up would allow the veterinarian to listen to his heart and lungs and ensure that he isn't having any problems such as arthritis contributing to mobility problems.

    It sounds like Chance is sick. Old age is not a disease, and it's illnesses that cause the symptoms you are seeing. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things such as eating something rotten, a GI illness, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or cancer. He could be having trouble going up and down stairs because of arthritis. The breathing heavily could be due to a respiratory infection or heart disease. I wouldn't worry about the dry nose, it's not a sign of illness in dogs. A dog's nose can go from wet to dry simply by laying in the sun or next to a heat source. His other symptoms are very concerning and he does need to see a vet for them. I would call your vet right away to get him an appointment to be seen as soon as possible! I hope this helps!

Oh my. Poor guy. The weight loss and his body condition score is very concerning. Gradual weight loss in older pets is highly suspicous of cancer unfortunately. Other possible causes are intestinal parasites, diabetes mellitus, etc. There is also possible arthritis which is causing Blue to become debilitated and unable to move around well; however, generalized weakness could also be a cause. You can try to feed Blue a high calorie diet (ie puppy food) to help with his muscle tone and try over the counter joint supplements (ie Dasuquin) to help with his mobility. Why is my senior dog wobbly, panting, and losing significant weight?
Cholie looks very sweet! I think you need to take her in for an appointment with your vet as soon as you are able. I'm very concerned with how much weight she has lost in the past year and suspect she may be in pain due to your description of her being restless. Her wobbling may be related to arthritis in her lower spine and hips. Some older dogs can have strokes that cause neurologic signs like you are describing, or can develop vestibular disease which can cause them to be very dizzy and have trouble walking. She likely needs x-rays to evaluate her lower spine/hips as well as blood work and a fecal check to see what could be causing that much weight loss.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the photos, it is difficult to say for sure what the growth could be. This may be benign or malignant but further testing would need to be performed on it (such as a needle aspirate or biopsy performed by your veterinarian). It has the appearance of a benign tumor but I cannot say for sure. In regards to the weight loss and not being able to hold his weight, there may be a number of causes for this such as cancer, systemic disease / infection, etc. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine George so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Judging from your description of the symptoms you are seeing, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Max so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I am sorry to hear about Pinta. These symptoms are unfortunately concerning, especially in an older dog. Difficulty breathing is a very serious condition and considered an emergency if she is struggling to get breath normally. Possible causes can vary from primary lung issues such as infections like pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, and tumors in the lung. Heart disease can also result in breathing problems, as can sudden anemia due to bleeding inside the body cavity. I would recommend getting Pinta into the vet as soon as possible, and if she is struggling to breath then she needs to visit the emergency vet if your vet is closed. They will examine her and likely recommend x-rays of the lungs. This will help them determine if treatment is possible or if she can be made more comfortable. Best of luck to you and Pinta.

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry to hear that your pet Bubbalina is so ill. Nose bleeds that are persistent in an older dog are highly suspicious of cancer or a fungal infection. Trauma to the nose is also possible, but unlikely to result in chronic bleeding episodes. I am so sorry but Bubbalina needs to be seen by your vet right away for testing (Bloodwork +.- radiographs). If cancer is present, then steroids may be recommended to try and slow down the progression and also supportive care can be provided to Bubbalina to hopefully make her more comfortable. Senior dog: swollen nodes, weight loss, wheezing. What should I do?
Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Daisy has been feeling so poorly. It is very concerning that she is experiencing difficulty breathing with wheezing, and weight loss. Difficulty breathing indicates that she is already in some degree pain with a diminished quality of life. Given her enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss, and respiratory changes, lymphoma would be my primary concern. This would be diagnosed by fine needle aspirates that use a needle to draw a few cells out of her lymph nodes for microscopic evaluation. However, even if you opt not to pursue further testing (which is understandable), I still strongly recommend taking Daisy to her vet for a physical exam and thorough discussion of her current quality of life. It may be in Daisy's best interest to consider euthanasia to alleviate her suffering. I realize that this is never an easy decision to make, but I hope that an open discussion with her vet may provide some clarity. I'm sorry that you and Daisy are going through this situation.
