Senior dog: swollen nodes, weight loss, wheezing. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

My 12 year old beagle/pit mix has swollen lymph nodes on both sides of her neck for at least 3 months. She is losing weight and will no longer eat dry food. I have started her on wet food and she eats it but has troubles breathing after eating. Lots of wheezing and whole body contracts. Her ribs and hips are now showing. She otherwise seems very happy. I dont want to pay for testing as shes already 12 and may be near the end of her life but I dont want her in pain. What should I do?

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Daisy has been feeling so poorly. It is very concerning that she is experiencing difficulty breathing with wheezing, and weight loss. Difficulty breathing indicates that she is already in some degree pain with a diminished quality of life. Given her enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss, and respiratory changes, lymphoma would be my primary concern. This would be diagnosed by fine needle aspirates that use a needle to draw a few cells out of her lymph nodes for microscopic evaluation. However, even if you opt not to pursue further testing (which is understandable), I still strongly recommend taking Daisy to her vet for a physical exam and thorough discussion of her current quality of life. It may be in Daisy's best interest to consider euthanasia to alleviate her suffering. I realize that this is never an easy decision to make, but I hope that an open discussion with her vet may provide some clarity. I'm sorry that you and Daisy are going through this situation.

    I'm sorry that Daisy is going through this! Swollen lymph nodes can be an indication of infection, however I'm also concerned that it could be related to a cancer called lymphoma. I really think you need to take Daisy to a veterinarian so that she can at least receive pain medication to improve her quality of life. Taking a small needle sample from the lymph nodes is necessary to diagnose lymphoma. Even if you're unable or unwilling to do testing your veterinarian can prescribe pain medications, corticosteroids or antibiotics if they feel an infection is causing this. You can also discuss quality of life issues with your veterinarian, so that if Daisy is suffering from cancer it may be easier to make the difficult decision on euthanasia if and when the time comes. Again, I am sorry Daisy is going through this. I hope she gets the care she needs and is feeling better soon.

I'm sorry Vaida has lymphoma. There is a condition known as cachexia when a dog has cancer where they lose muscle mass and weight even if they eat enough. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done for it, and nothing that can help her gain weight. I don't know how much time she has left or what stage of cancer she is in without seeing her in person, but cachexia is not a good sign. I'd start marking on a calendar when she has good days and bad days, and when the bad days outweigh the good days, it would be time to consider letting her go. I hope this helps during this tough time.

Why are my senior dog's neck lymph nodes swollen and losing weight?
Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Oh, poor Ace! The most common lymph nodes that we can feel on the outside are the ones under the jaw/neck, the prescapular (where the front legs meet the neck) and the popliteals (behind the knees or "knee pit"). If you are able to feel lymph nodes that are larger than 1 cm to egg sized then the most common reason is lymphoma. Especially in a dog Ace's age and with the weight loss. It is easy to diagnose lymphoma by aspirating the lymph nodes. Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice but sometimes steroids alone can give a couple of months of good time. Why is my dog losing weight, coughing, and has swollen lymph nodes?
Twenty pounds is a lot of weight to lose in three weeks, and that's very concerning to me! I would have Shady seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The swollen lymph nodes unfortunately could be a sign of lymphoma, which would also account for the weight loss. He could also have a severe infection causing the lymph node swelling. Please have her checked by your vet as soon as possible. This is not normal and although any lumps are concerning, any that are painful or rapidly growing are very suspicious for underlying issues such as cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital to improve outcomes and reduce undue pain and discomfort.

My Boxer has swollen lymph nodes and is losing weight. Is it cancer?
Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say for sure what the cause is based on your description. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to inflammation, infection or cancer. Seeing that Diamond is a boxer breed, is 7 years old, losing weight and has enlarged lymph nodes leads me to suspect something such as Lymphoma (a type of cancer) as the cause. I would recommend having this further worked up with a veterinarian and have further testing done such as a needle aspirate and cytology to help determine what it could be. This test is not that expensive and can tell a veterinarian a lot about the area tested. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Why is my senior dog breathing heavily with large throat lumps?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Elphaba. I worry that bumps you have noticed are enlarged lymph nodes. I would try to feel other areas on her body for similar and symmetrical bumps. Lymph nodes are also found in front of the shoulders, in the armpits and groin as well as behind the knees. She will need to see a veterinarian to have her condition diagnosed, but enlarged lymph nodes can indicate serious disease. I hope this information helps!

My senior dog is weak, losing weight, peeing, and breathing hard. Why?
Oh my. Poor guy. The weight loss and his body condition score is very concerning. Gradual weight loss in older pets is highly suspicous of cancer unfortunately. Other possible causes are intestinal parasites, diabetes mellitus, etc. There is also possible arthritis which is causing Blue to become debilitated and unable to move around well; however, generalized weakness could also be a cause. You can try to feed Blue a high calorie diet (ie puppy food) to help with his muscle tone and try over the counter joint supplements (ie Dasuquin) to help with his mobility.
