My 2-day-old husky puppy isn't gaining weight. Should I worry?

I don't think it's necessarily something to be worried about at this stage. It is not uncommon for huskies and husky-type dogs to be picky/light eaters. She may be low energy because she is unsure of her surroundings. You have only had her one day. Don't force her or push her to be social if she doesn't want to be. If she is vomiting or having diarrhea she should see a veterinarian ASAP. If she is of normal body weight I would not be concerned. Many dogs these days are overfed and too fat. I doubt she will be starve herself. In my entire veterinary career I think I have only told 1 or 2 people that their dogs were too skinny. It is very rare. I suggest you get a scale and weigh her once a week and keep a log. When Amelia goes to the vet next take the log with you and you can discuss it with them. Has she been dewormed? Is she up to date on her vaccinations? She is supposed to have a round of vaccines at 8 weeks of age, 12 weeks of age and 16 weeks of age. No, this isn't normal that they aren't gaining weight. Failure to gain weight is a sign of illness in these newborn puppies, and I would have them seen by a vet immediately. They may need more food as well to gain weight, but I would have them seen by a vet to be safe.

I would feed her according to the instructions on her bag of food, but I would divide it into three equal portions to feed her three times a day. I don't worry about puppies being fat, especially if they are very active. They are growing, and they don't need to be a diet. I hope this helps!

An extremely small percentage of dogs have true grain allergies and most of these dogs are Irish setters. Grain free diets are high in carbohydrates and typically lead to weight gain. I also prefer to feed a food labeled for puppies instead of all life stages. I feel it will better meet her needs as a growing dog. All that being said, the best diet is the one that works for your individual dog. She must like the food, have no vomiting and diarrhea on it and have a glossy hair coat. These are signs it is meeting her nutritional needs. As for her adult size, you can typically double her body weight at 16 weeks of age. This is typically when she received her last set of puppy vaccines. I hope this information helps!

Hi, it's hard to appreciate Winters size from your photos but he's a handsome dog and definitely looks like a husky. Remember, he's still growing and will continue to grow until he's around 10-12mths old. His adult size will resemble his parents, so if you know what size they are, Winter will be like them. You don't need to fatten him up, it's healthier to stay leaner.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! How long you want her to heel on a walk is up to you. If you want her to not pull and be by your side then she should be able to do it the entire walk. At 7 months old Sienna is still growing bone wise. She doesn't look overweight in your pictures. Dogs do tend to get overweight after their spay, so you do have to be careful. I would continue the current amount of food. I provided a link on how to determine ideal body condition. If she gets too overweight, cut back. She is approaching the high end of the weight range for a female. I am guessing she will hit 50 lbs. If she is a larger framed husky she could go over that. You should have Zena examined by your veterinarian to make sure she is healthy. At the same time you can get her wormed (worms could be a reason for not gaining weight), and vaccinated. You say her dam and sire did not look healthy....there could be a congenital problem that could keep her from gaining weight. Feed her a good quality complete puppy food for medium to large dogs and feed her according to the instructions on the bag.
