My newborn puppy has a deformed leg that smells bad. Is it infected?

This sounds like a bad situation. Yes euthanasia may be the most human option, however, if that is not an option for you than it is VERY important to involve a veterinarian so that the puppy can be protected with antibiotics and something to help with pain. Your veterinarian may advise a surgery to remove any bony remnants if the traumatic amputation left behind parts that could lead to pain and arthritis. Please, please take her in for some antibiotics at the very least. She could develop a life threatening infection.

This is a medical emergency, and this puppy needs to see a vet now. This will be extremely painful for him, and he needs pain medications right away. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He also needs x-rays to determine how bad the fracture is, and if surgery is an option to repair it. If the fracture is really bad, amputation may be needed, but only a vet can decide that. Please take him into a vet immediately.

Congratulations on your new puppies. As you were describing how one of them was walking, I began to think that either there has been trauma to that specific leg either buy mom accidentally rolling over on the puppy, etc. or there may even be a genetic growth disorder that is affecting the specific puppy. Actally there is still that a lot that can be done for pets this young in terms of veterinary care. Perhaps a small splint can be applied or maybe there is a nutritional deficiency that is causing this leg abnormality that can be corrected by proper supplementation. Nevertheless, I urge you to take the affected puppy to the veterinarian as soon as possible to have a complete orthopedic examination performed. I would also take another one of the puppies as well as the mother just in case they need to do some testing on them also to see if there are any linking causes. Good luck. Oh my goodness, Honey is so cute! What an adorable puppy! I recommend having her seen by a vet for this problem and to have x-rays done on that leg. It could be there was a disruption to the growth plate of her radius or ulna causing one of those bones to stop growing while the other continues to grown and causes the deformity you are seeing. This can be corrected surgically, which is why I recommend having her seen by a vet. With the x-rays, the vet can determine what is causing the deformity and can discuss surgical options with you. Poor kitten! I'm sorry that its leg is injured - since it has swelling, drainage, and a foul odor, it sounds like it's probably infected as well. Tiny kittens like this can actually be treated with antibiotics when needed, so I would definitely recommend having the baby checked by a vet as soon as you can. He/she can prescribe antibiotics for the infection if needed, or even advise on other options such as amputation if the damage is severe. It's not ideal to do things like this in very young babies, but it's certainly possible to do them when needed.

You will need to take your puppy to an orthopedic surgeon for assessment. Your puppy needs to be x-rayed. Once the orthopedic surgeon sees the build of the hips and hind legs he will be able to tell you whether this may need surgery, bandaging or other ways to improve or if there is no way to fix this. He will also need to do a neurological exam to make sure your puppy can actually move the legs. Should the condition not be improvable,then your puppy could get a wheelchair for the hindlegs and so live a happy life.

Unfortunately, there is no home treatment for this. The puppy really needs to be seen to make sure there wasn't any serious damage done to his leg, as that can affect his future growth. Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and if he's in distress, he needs medical attention now. I would take this puppy, his littermates, and his mother into the vet immediately.
