Why won't my new puppy eat kibble? He just came home and has diarrhea.

Interesting situation, either Bentley prefers the taste of the new food that caused the diarrhea or he is still suffering from an upset stomach. just in order to test the situation you should give him some of the other food to see if he is eating it, alternatively give him some boiled chicken. if his appetite is not the problem then he is being picky, give him a few days and he will start eating his old food again.

Poor guy. He may be stressed out from being in a new environment. Offer him som boiled plain chicken and rice to see if you can entice him to eat. Also adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food can help firm his stool if it is stress related. Continue to monitor him for the next 24 hrs for any change. It may take him a day or two to get acclimated to you. However, if he goes beyond 24 hrs without eating and seems lethargic or sick, its best to take him to your vet for a wellness check. You are correct that Royal Canin is a better food for Darcy, and it's a good you are making the switch to it. It could be that the combination of the Pedigree and Royal Canin is causing the diarrhea, and she's not eating because of an upset stomach. I wouldn't be worried just yet, and I will give you a home remedy to try before having to take her into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet, just the Royal Canin dry only. The diarrhea could also be caused by intestinal parasites, and I would make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments.

Sometimes puppies don’t have a great appetite when they first come home to a new environment. If you don’t know what he was eating before you got him you may want to find out so you can continue with that food. You could also try adding some canned food to tempt him. If he’s had any vomiting or diarrhea, or if his appetite does not improve in a day or two I’d recommend seeing your vet for an exam. Intestinal parasites and several hereditary diseases could cause a decrease in appetite and it’s a good idea to see a vet for a general health check up when you get a new puppy.

Your pups are so cute! Diarrhea and reduced appetite could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Parvovirus is also a possibility, particularly in a dog as young as Rocky, as you mentioned he is too young to have had all his boosters yet. Please make an appointment to have Rocky seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as diarrhea can easily lead to dehydration in such a young pup, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. In the mean time, if he is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken with boiled plain white rice once it has cooled. These signs can definitely be due to nerves or the anxiety of being in a new place. It is hard for puppies to be separated from their littermates or mothers, go in a car they've never been in, and be surrounded by people they've never met. He likely won't take very long to adjust- young puppies tend to feel like part of the family very quickly - it sounds like he is playing already! He should get an appetite and start eating a puppy diet well. There should be a recommended feeding amount on the side of the puppy food bag. His stools should start to firm up - if they remain soft or become liquidy, he may have gastrointestinal parasites/worms that need to be treated - even if wherever you got him from treated him already. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours.
