Why is my new dog sick with kennel cough, giardia, parvo so fast?

This is a really good question, with no perfect answer. With the giardia she is technically still considered to be potentially shedding eggs until she has a negative fecal exam. With the kennel cough, depending on which virus is causing it she can still be shedding virus up to 3 weeks even though she may be symptom free. I hope this helps answer your question. The vaccine helps to decrease the strength of the infection in most cases but it may not fully protect. It’s just like how you can still get the flu even though you get the flu vaccine but you don’t usually get us sick. I recommend to call the shelter. They will likely want to see her again or refer you to a veterinarian. There are other causes of coughing as well including allergies. The thirst is usually secondary (that is, to keep up with the water loss of the diarrhea.) The antibiotics Tylan and metronidazole are commonly prescribed for diarrhea because they restore the gut bacteria balance and have some anti-inflammatory effects in the gut as well. I expect that part o clear up in a few days. The cough could still be kennel cough. “Kennel cough” is a syndrome that can be caused by about a dozen viruses and bacteria. The current kennel cough vaccine only covers one bacterial cause. If it is mild, you may not need to do anything. Most dogs clear kennel cough on their own within 4 weeks. If she is not eating, is lethargic, the cough is severe or keeps her (or you) up at night, you need to see your vet for antibiotics and/or a cough suppressant. Of course coughing can also be: pneumonia, fungal infection, heart disease, bronchitis, and others. So if you are worried at all, see your vet. Best wishes to you and the pups!

The good news is that it's a self limiting disease, and it typically clears up in around three weeks. Any dog with kennel cough should be isolated for at least two weeks, possibly longer depending on the severity of the infection. Keep her in a well-humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar to minimize coughing. Rest her dog for at least seven days to minimize irritation of the airways caused by excessive coughing. I would have her seen by a vet who can confirm that she has kennel cough, and can prescribe medications to lessen the severity of her symptoms. It is most definitely bordetella. They can still get the disease even if vaccinated. It is kind of like our flu vaccine - you can still get the disease but usually the course of disease is shorter and the symptoms are more mild. Bordetella can progress into a pneumonia which is why we often treat dogs with antibiotics. If Gracie is still not well she needs to see a vet.

I don’t think this sounds like parvovirus. It actually sounds like your dogs could have canine infectious respiratory disease syndrome or kennel cough. If it is primarily coughing and clear nasal discharge that you are seeing there may not be any treatment necessary. I’d the nasal discharge is yellow or green and opaque or if the dogs have a decrease in appetite or trouble breathing you should see your vet.
