My new dog is scared and won't leave her crate. How to help?

Poor little thing. It can take some time for dogs that are scared and poorly socialized to adjust. I find that it can be a big help and confidence booster for them to see you interact with another dog. Sometimes they can also relate better to having another dog around. That being said, this should be a calm, easy going and non threatening dog to her. Perhaps an adult sweet friendly dog that is a similar size. It is important for her to eat and drink, so you may have to put those things in her kennel where she feels safe for now. Continue to be patient, talk in a calm and gentle voice and she will eventually learn to trust you. She lacks confidence right now and that does not come overnight, I would consider having her interact with you and another dog if it is the right dog.

I hate to hear that about Paisley. This is an instance where clicker training can be immensely beneficial. You will need either really high value treats or a really high value toy. Once she knows that the clicker sound means a reward is coming, start by having her in the crate and you sit near the opening. Hold the reward toward her but don’t look directly at her (looking at them can be intimidating). As soon as she makes any motion toward the reward, click and treat her. She will gain confidence and you will work on drawing her further and further out of the crate. This is going to be a slow process to have patience and don’t get frustrated. If you just adopted her yesterday it is still very soon for her to be warmed up to you. It can take a full 2 weeks for dogs to be completely comfortable at a home and with the people that adopted them. I would just give her lots of love and patience. He is away from his mommy and his siblings for the first time. He is in a place foreign to him. He feels all alone and lonely. The kennel feels safest for him at this time. Give him time to come out by himself. Put his food and water outside, near the kennel. He will likely come out at night to eat and drink. Let him check out the place and be nice to him. It will take time, but he will come around.

Hi. Yes, it is absolutely ok to use the crate tonight. She may not be used to it so she will want to get out. Just say no loudly and keep saying it. Place crate next to your bed so she can see you. I would not leave a chew toy in there, as we dont want her to rio anything up or choke or ingest pieces while we arent watching. It will take some time for her to stop crying and scratching, so your rest will be affected. Be patient and it will get better.

Patience and time and lots of loving and treats will help him grow to trust you. Since he's worried on walks, I would keep them short for now, carry treats or a favorite toy with you and when he follows you or comes when you call, even just one step, reward him and give him lots of praise. Find out what he likes to play with, teach him tricks or little tasks, take him for rides with you, whatever he seems to like, do that. As an adult dog in a new situation, it can be overwhelming. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise, play fetch or get him involved in dog agility of some other social activity to help boost his confidence when he's ready.

Congratulations on adopting Lady! Earning trust will take a lot of patience and time. Remember that she has had a lot of sudden changes with her new home and a new person in her life. Start by giving her space in her new home and try putting a bed in her favorite space in the house to make this her "safe spot". Try to avoid approaching her if she is in this safe spot. If Lady is food motivated, you can start by offering a few high value treats when she lets you gently pet her. Some dogs are threatened when you reach over the top of the head and respond more favorably to scratches on the chest or under the chin. Once you figure out what she enjoys (food, walks, chasing a ball, etc.), you will be able to build upon that activity and spend most of your interaction doing her favorite things. One other thing to try is a calming pheromone collar or diffuser (Adaptil is one example) to see if this helps to calm her a bit. I hope this helps!
