My new small dog won't eat much but seems healthy. Is this normal?

As long as she eats and is not losing weight, don't stress out over it. It is true that smaller breeds can be a bit more finicky. Switching foods would not be recommended as it can lead to gastrointestinal upset and reinforce her finicky nature. Instead, try mixing in a bit of warm water or a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite.

The most likely scenario is that Kanye is at the age where eating ravenously declines because he is no longer growing. I would pick a food and continue measuring it out twice daily. Just leave the food out for the day to see what he is eating. I would expect a dog this size to eat about 2-3 cups per day of adult dog food. My own personal dog of the same size is also what I call a “camel eater”. He’ll go a day or even two without eating and then eat his whole bowl. So long as Kanye stays a normal weight, has normal, regular stools, and is energetic and happy, I’m not too concerned. On the other hand, of you note vomiting, lethargy, or weight loss, it’s time to see the vet. Best wishes to you and Kanye!

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know if Remy's behavior is due to illness or not liking the food. Especially with very small puppies, they need to eat frequently to avoid low blood sugar which can be fatal. I recommend to have Remy examined to be safe. You may also experiment with different types of puppy food (try a mixture of canned and dry). Royal Canin tends to be a good brand and they make a diet for yorkies. You may also talk to the veterinarian about keeping some dextrose or karosyrup on hand in case Remy ever shows any signs of low blood sugar. Best of luck.

Kudos to you for being so concerned about Buddy! :-) As long as Buddy is at a healthy body weight, he is likely getting plenty to eat. To make sure he seems to be a healthy body weight, run your hands over his ribs to assure that you can easily feel (but not see) his ribs. You should also be able to see a "waistline" when looking down at him. I can't see Buddy well enough in the pictures to help you determine if his weight is appropriate. Some dogs are naturally picky or have been conditioned to eat less dog food because they know that treats or more appealing food is coming. I always recommend offering food twice daily as you are doing, but some dogs choose to only eat once a day. Avoid midday treats or snacks to try to train Buddy to eat at mealtimes and continue avoiding table scraps. Make sure that Buddy is being offered a high quality kibble (I generally recommend Science Diet, Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin foods) and if you choose to switch foods, be sure to do so by mixing old and new foods together over 5-7 days. If the canned diet seems to tempt him to eat, you can continue mixing a bit in with the kibble, but I would recommend avoiding Beneful and looking for a higher quality canned option. As long as this is not a brand new problem, Bleu is of normal weight (not underweight where his ribs, back bone or pelvis are showing through his skin...) drinking well, bright, alert, not experiencing any other signs such as vomiting, loose stools, it sounds to me as though you may have a dog who simply is not very "food motivated", and you may have a "picky eater." on your hands! The good news about picky eaters is that they indeed WILL eat when they are hungry. If this is a new condition for Bleu, if he is underweight, or experiencing any other signs of illness, please consider visiting your veterinarian for a check up.

If there is a cause for concern for illness. If this is behavioral, my advice is to pick a high quality food and stick with it. The two brands that seem to be most palatable are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Also, as long as your pet is healthy, its ok if he skips a meal. Dogs are smart and they often train humans to give them something else. Have him examined if illness or a medical cause is suspected. What a cute puppy! With him being 7 months old and a small breed dog, I think that Lucas is slowing down on his growing. This can cause a reduction in his appetite. I find that the more that we change a dog's food- the more pickier they become. I would stick with one brand, offer 1/3 of slightly less than the daily recommended amount (they sell dog food, so the more he eats the more you buy) three times daily. Give him a set amount of time and then pick up the bowl. This will create some urgency. He will eat if he is hungry. The more we change and add things, the more he will wait to eat to see what good stuff will be added. I would keep track of his body condition score- you should be able to feel his ribs with a little bit of fat cover, but not see them. As long as he is in good body condition, I would not worry. Some dogs are not food motivated and will just eat what they need. If you have any questions about his weight or body condition score, you can ask your veterinarian. I don't think that grain free food are necessary. Dogs are omnivores.
