My new dog won't eat, is shy, has dandruff. When can I bathe him?

Congratulations on your new addition! I'm glad to hear that Champ is very well-behaved. It's never a big surprise when a new pet refuses to eat or drink well when they're first brought to a new home. This change can be quite stressful and intimidating to them, and can evoke a bit of anxiety, leading to this refusal to eat or drink. First of all, try to give Champ as much space as he wants. You can offer him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to try to tempt him to eat, then gradually mix in his regular dog food. When you offer him food, try to do so in a quiet, calm environment where he can eat undisturbed by people or other pets. Initially, he'll probably be more willing to eat and drink when he's alone. My guess is that he's drinking some water when you aren't watching - particularly if he's urinating normally. Try to work on giving Champ a safe space where he can always go if he wants to be alone, such as a crate or a bed in the corner of a quiet room, and respect his boundaries by always leaving him alone if he's in that space. Building up on this safe space can help a dog feel more comfortable and confident in their surroundings, which in turn will likely facilitate normal behaviors, including eating and drinking. Adopting a new dog is so much fun! Whenever bringing a new dog into the home, it should be done slowly with the existing animals already there to make the transition smoothly. The new dog should be kept separated from the other animals when home alone to avoid any problems, and their interactions should be monitored when you are home so you can separate them at any problem. I'm not sure if you have any additional animals in the home, but if you have cats for example, it's normal they will hiss at the dog. Do not allow them to swipe at the dog, separating them right away if you notice the cat getting upset. Also do not allow the dog to chase the cats. If you don't have any other animals in your home, then just be patient with the dog as it acclimates to his new house. Moving into a new home can be stressful, and some dogs may not eat or drink at first. This will pass in time. Shelter dogs should be taken care of just like any other dog: Fed twice a day, make sure they are up to date on their vaccines, flea and deworming treatments, and feed them a high quality dog food :-)

Poor Boomer! It does sound like he's a bit stressed. You can try hand feeding him his food for a few days until he settles in to see if that helps (especially if he takes it from you), or try to entice him to eat his own food by adding in a little boiled chicken or low-sodium broth to make it tasty. You can then slowly phase out both as he becomes more comfortable. If he continues to refuse to eat, or starts to show any signs of illness, seeking a vet exam to rule out any issues is a good idea. If he doesn't seem to settle down or is very stressed for several weeks, talking with a trainer is another option as well.

Congratulations on adding Kane to your family! You cannot wash Kane until the wounds have completely healed. He has been in rough circumstances so give a good diet and a loving home a chance to work before you address his skin. I'm sure you have already purchased food but I would recommend Royal Canin or Nutro as both of these are good for dogs who are prone to dry skin. The staples will be removed 10-14 days after they were placed. Protect them from scratching and licking. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!! It sounds like you are doing the right thing nutritionally with Buddy. I would make sure that the puppy Pedigree you are feeding is for larger breed dogs since he is a Lab. Boiled eggs are a great protein source and good fat source but I don't think you need to give that everyday. Maybe decrease the frequency of that to allow him to grow a slower rate like the larger breed puppy foods account for. Puppies get dirty and need to be bathed. It's ok to bathe him but just keep him warm and dry him off good once you are done. Use a good oatmeal shampoo, preferably one without soap or detergent especially if you are using topical flea and tick products. Soap/detergent shampoos will strip some of those products off, lessening their duration and effectiveness. Cooked chicken without the skin is a good treat or addition to a dogs diet. Just remember we don't want him to grow too fast so don't feed a lot at one time and spread out the frequency of giving extra protein to him. Good luck with Buddy. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! If Saint has a dry goose honk cough it is likely kennel cough since he was just in the shelter. Kennel cough is usually self limiting over 2 weeks. He shouldn't be allowed around other dogs until the cough has resolved as it is very contagious. His skin can be from fleas, a skin infection, poor diet, demodex or ring worm. There is also a gland at the tail base that can get infected. Be sure he is on a good oral flea and tick preventative. Nexgard, Bravecto and Simparica get fleas and ticks, as well as demodec. I would start him on a good commercial balanced dog food, start an Omega 3 fish oil and try a medicated shampoo. if the skin doesn't improve in 2 weeks he should be seen by a Vet. Bathe him 2x's per week and let the lather sit on for 10 mins before rinsing. I attached links below to some products.
