My neutered male dog is humping. Can he get my female dog pregnant?

A recently neutered male dog may potentially impregnate a receptive female for as long as one month after surgery. Sperm is produced in the testicles then mixes with seminal fluid in the prostate. It is possible for those sperm to survive for as long as a month after the testes, which replenish the supply, are removed. Additionally, testosterone levels are still high in the male and he will want mate with a receptive female until those levels decline.

A neutered dog can still have sex – if he wants. If it has been long enough after the neuter, (typically they are completely sterile six to eight weeks after being neutered )he cannot impregnate the female.

Hello. It is tough to tell without an x-ray or ultrasound exam. It is very possible that the male still had viable sperm in his reproductive tract ( sperm can remain viable for 3-4 weeks in the accessory sex glands of a recently neutered male ). It is never a guarantee that this behavior will be corrected by neutering but in many cases it does help quite a bit. Many times this behavior is because the male dog is establishing dominance over another animal. Other times, this is breeding behavior and is corrected by the drop in testosterone after neutering. The mounting is normal and they could even ‘lock’ but your male cannot get Hazel pregnant. I would however recommend to separate them when Haze comes into heat to make sure neither dog is injured trying to mate. I hope this helps.

Neutered males can display erections and ejaculate just like intact males. They may mount in a display of dominance or can still mount to breed in the presence of an intact and receptive female. Correct the behavior immediately (even though no litters will come of it) and distract or separate him completely from the female until she is no longer in heat. Consider having your female spayed in the near future.

It sounds like Kentucky is masturbating, and neutered dogs do masturbate. If he wasn't neutered before he came to the shelter, he will have learned that masturbating feels good, and so he keeps up the behavior even though he is now fixed. It is unusual, however, that he had intercourse with an in heat female, which does not typically occur with neutered dogs. It makes it possible that he may have a retained testicle in his abdomen. I would have Kentucky seen by a vet for this, he may need surgery to determine if a testicle was left behind.
