Is neem oil in dog toothpaste dangerous? What toothpaste should I use?

The most important part of a home dental care program is actually just brushing the teeth at all and does not seem to make a difference which toothpaste is used unless you use a proven toothpaste. There are actually only 2 toothpastes on the market that have been proven to help improve dental health in dogs. I have found that homemade toothpastes are not very good tasting (so it makes it harder for you to brush the teeth) and would recommend using a good brush without any toothpaste instead of making a homemade toothpaste. I wouldn’t recommend using this combination to brush your dog’s teeth. While the coconut oil probably tastes good, it will just add unwanted calories to your dog’s diet, even if you are using a small amount. And the baking soda will be too harsh and abrasive for your dog. Instead I would recommend a toothpaste specifically made for dog’s. Or, you don’t even have to use toothpaste at all! The most important part of brushing a dog’s teeth is the mechanical action of brushing away the plaque that builds up on the teeth! Hello, It does appear that Chhutki has tartar and plaque accumulation on her teeth. It's unfortunate she cannot have an anesthetic dental cleaning due to her heart disease. I do not know of parabens causing any health problems in dogs. I believe its best to use the dentagel oil as your vet prescribed. I think this will be the most effective possible treatment in her case. Unfortunately, there is no natural remedy to dental disease. The smell is from the tartar and bacterial growth in the mouth. Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. You are likely to get better compliance from Joshie if you use commercial toothpaste made for dogs as it is flavored and dogs actually like it. If you don't make it taste good she will probably not be too happy with the brushing procedure. What is bad for dogs in human toothpaste is the flouride. So, esentially you can use human children's toothpaste as it does not contain flouride. She probably won't like those flavors either though. You can make your own toothpaste if you want to. Baking soda is not toxic to dogs and should be fine to use. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as that will cause vomiting if she swallows too much of it. Hello. Using a product like this probably will not hurt, but I do not believe it will do as it claims, that is to reduce plaque & tarter without brushing. It may freshen up the breath some, but that is about all. If your pet's teeth are pretty clean & there is no significant periodontal disease ( no bright red gums ), then this may help & be an adjunct for your pets oral health. Most dog toothpastes are made to be safe to ingest because we just can’t trust a dog not to swallow the toothpastes! Unless the label specifically says not to ingest the toothpaste I don’t think there is a concern with what you are doing, though without the action of brushing the teeth you won’t get the full effect of the toothpaste, but it sounds like brushing just might not work out for Gracie! Not all dogs tolerate it. You could try a different canine toothpaste just in case she prefers another. I recommend the CET brand toothpaste for dogs. Best of luck!
