Is my 19lb Miniature Schnauzer puppy overweight? What should I do?

I got Maddie weighed today and she weighs 19lbs is she overweight?

This is above the upper weight range typical of Miniature Schnauzer's so yes she may be overweight. I see she's only about 8 months old, so instead of putting her on a diet (it's because she's still growing and you shouldn't restrict her feed when she's growing), I would increase her exercise. Make sure she gets at least 30 minutes of exercise twice a day.

Without being able to see Maddie, I can't say for sure if she is overweight or not - 19 lbs would be just fine for some Miniature Schnauzers, and might be too much for others. What's more important than her actual weight is her body condition. You should be able to feel her ribs easily when you run your hands down her sides, and she should also have a noticeable abdominal tuck (or "waistline") just behind her ribs. If you can't feel her ribs easily or she doesn't have a nice waistline, then she's probably too heavy.

If you're unsure, you could ask your veterinarian for his/her opinion, or upload a photo of Maddie for us to look at so that we can give you a better evaluation of her condition.

A Havenese should weigh between 7-13 pounds fully grown, so based on that, it could be that Kiba is a bit bigger. Now, he's a puppy, and because he's still growing, I don't recommend introducing any diets as they may interfere with his growth. To keep him from getting overweight, I would cut out all treats. Kiba shouldn't be getting treats every day, as a treat should only be an occasional thing. For now, however, no more treats, cheese, or chews. Just his dog food twice a day, feed according to the package instructions, and make sure that he gets exercise twice a day for at least 20-30 minutes :-)

Great question! A puppy's diet should have 8% fat and at least 22% protein. Adult dogs need 5% fat and 18% protein at a minimum. A high quality puppy formulated food and adult dog food will provide this for them. I hope this helps!

How much and how often to feed a 5-week-old Miniature Schnauzer puppy?

Irati should eat about 1/3-1/2 cup of Science Diet puppy food per day mixed with some water, divided into smaller meals. Since she is still quite young and small, I generally recommend feeding 4-5 times per day. I'm working under the assumption that she is no longer with her mother, and as such is not nursing. If she is still nursing from her mom, she will not need quite as much food. As a future reference, following the chart on the bag of puppy food as Irati grows will be helpful, as you will frequently need to adjust the volume of kibble that she is eating. She should continue eating puppy food until she is 1 year old, after which time she can be transitioned to an adult dog food. Any time you make a chance in her diet, be sure to do so gradually over 5-7 days. I hope this helps!

I see that Ellie is five months old. Because she is a growing puppy, it is not recommended to worry about if she is overweight or not. Restricting any food or putting her on a diet at this age could adversely affect her growth. I would recommend feeding her a puppy formulated food, feed according to the instructions on the bag, and take her out for exercise twice a day for 25 minutes at a time.

How much exercise does my overweight dog need to lose weight?

I would recommend doing moderate exercise (brisk walking, chasing ball, etc) for 30 minutes twice daily. I would also recommend a low fat food. The low fat prescription diets are the most effective, such as Hil'ls Metaboilc and Hill's W/D. It is also best to make sure your vet checks Grecia for any underlying metabolic disorder such as Thyroid disease, which can cause weight gain, letharyg and a dry dull haircoat. I hope this helps!
