Which Megavac vaccine is right for my 6-week-old puppy: P or D?

There are a whole lot of different vaccines available out there in the world. The one to which you are referring is the Distemper Combination vaccine. In my book, as long as the vaccine is offering protection for the distemper virus, parvovirus, adenovirus, and para-influenza, all the rest are bonuses. But, just make sure that whatever vaccine is being given offers protection for those. If not, I would choose something different. I would also make sure that if you are administering vaccines yourself rather than going to a vet, that you use a very reputable place to purchase them. If the shots were not be refrigerated or were in an inappropriate environment, they may be ineffective. Hope this helps!

When you are discussing vaccinations I am assuming you are referring to the distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza combination vaccine (DAPP). If Theodore is only about 6 weeks old he will need at least 3-4 more DAPP vaccines spaced approximately one month apart to be fully protected against distemper. Because Theodore will be at risk until he receives all of his distemper booster shots it is best to minimize his risk by not taking him to places where sick dogs may have been. So avoiding dog parks, pet stores, and kennels is a good idea. I would recommend starting veterinary visits for Theodore around 8 weeks of age so he can be examined and another DAPP vaccine can be given. Please remember to bring a fecal sample with you to the vet visit so he can be checked for intestinal parasites. Hi there! Since Mocha is six weeks old, he should go ahead and start his vaccinations now. He will need a DAPP vaccine (for distemper, adenovirus, parvo, and parainfluenza) now - this vaccine will also need to be boostered every 3 weeks until he is 16 weeks or older. He will also need a rabies vaccine anytime after 12 weeks of age. Depending on his lifestyle and what diseases are prevalent in your area, he may also need to be vaccinated against Bordetelle (kennel cough), leptospirosis, and/or Lyme disease. Your veterinarian can discuss the risks of these illnesses in your area and help you make this decision. And yes, he should also be dewormed. You can use a broad-spectrum dewormer like Strongid or Panacur from the pet store, or get a prescription dewormer from your vet's office if you prefer.

The first vaccine at 6 to 8 weeks of age protects the puppy from parvo in case it has no maternal antibodies left. If it has maternal antibodies left in its system, the vaccine will not do anything, however we cannot know whether there are any left or not. So it is a "just in case" protective vaccine.

I'm sorry Bea isn't feeling well at the moment! Typically puppies will receive a combination shot called a DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza). If she received a parvo shot only, which would be unusual, then no it will not protect her from distemper. I would check her vaccine book to see if she received a DHPPi shot, but also keep in mind that since she hasn't received her full course of vaccines, she still won't be fully protected from any disease she was vaccinate for until the three courses of vaccines are complete. It is possible, however, that her symptoms are caused by a respiratory virus which would cause her to sneeze and have watery eyes. It would also cause a decrease in appetite. Because she is young puppy that isn't fully vaccinated, the best course of action is to have her seen by a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms and can treat her for it. If your regular vet is closed, I would take Bea into an ER vet; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Yes, the distemper/parvo (DHPP) combination vaccinations that we use in puppies are the same as those we use in adults, but some of the ingredients in some of the combination vaccinations are not given until the puppies are older. I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian about which viruses should be included in puppies vaccinations, but they are generally canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. Corona virus may or may not be recommended and Leptospirosis should not be given until a puppy is older. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
