My Maltese has tear stains on antibiotics. What else can I try?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Mutton is a breed that we typically see the problem of tear staining. It is not harmful but cosmetically, it can be unsightly. There are supplements that have been known to reduce the brown stains. I would recommend a supplement such as Angel Eyes or Ocubright, which can reduce the brown staining that you are seeing after several months of being on the supplement. Hello. The most common cause of tear staining in dogs is blocked tear ducts. Often a course of a tetracycline medication can help resolve this. You will need to obtain this from your veterinarian. Two ways to try & remove the stains naturally, if the ducts are not blocked, are to use the probiotic, Fortiflora & a product told to me by a client. It is a tear stain remover made by NaturVet. You can see their products at https//www.naturvet.com. It can take a minimum of 2-3 weeks for the staining to resolve, but it is worth trying the probiotics & the topical NaturVet. I know that this can be frustrating. There are a few things you can try. There is a product called Angels' Eyes that comes in an oral form. It does have to be given on a consistent basis in order to see a difference. You can also use a contact solution with boric acid to reduce the staining. Do not use boric acid in any other form around the eyes as it can cause irritation or damage to the eyes. The other thing would be to have a groomer shave the hair from that area. This will keep her face cleaner and with less hair, there will be less staining.

Angel Eyes is the only product that I know of that can help with tear staining. It is not a magic miracle and doesn't work for every dog but I have had good success with some clients using it. All you can do it try it to see if it works for Jack. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ruby. Tear staining can be common in small breed dogs. At her next veterinarian appointment, I would ask about it though. If she has an eyelash growing in the wrong direction it can irritate the surface of her eye. Allergies or and an eye infection can cause this as well. If only one eye is affected, then I worry about a scratch across her eye. If her eyes are red, the discharge is yellow or green or if she is squinting, then she needs to see her veterinarian. If it is clear discharge and the eyes are otherwise normal, then I would have it checked at her next appointment. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Juliette! There is pigment normally present in tear film and saliva. If she is having excessive tearing and is either using her paws to rub her eyes (like a grooming cat) or is licking her paws that can explain the discoloration. The most common reason for a sudden onset of excessive tearing and licking of the paws is allergies (allergies can start anytime). You are right that the tear staining can be normal in some breeds and there is nothing that can be done. I would get Juliette in to your Vet for an evaluation of her eyes and skin. Watch her closely to see if she is pawing her face or is licking her feet. If the staining is on her back feet then you have your answer, she is licking them. Your vet can prescribe medications for her eyes and something to stop the itch. There are not products that work consistently to remove the staining. You will have to stop the inciting cause then wait for the hair to grow out and get her groomed. I wish you the best!
