How to help malnourished puppies gain weight, age, and treat fleas?

There is not much you can do other than to ensure good nutrition and health from this moment forward. I would recommend starting a high quality puppy food. In addition you want to make sure that they are up to date on vaccines per your veterinarian. They should be dewormed at least twice. Finally, you should endure they are on flea prevention and heartwo preventative if endemic in your area. All of these things should improve their overall condition. I am so sorry that Leo is not doing well! I bet he has lost a lot of weight by not eating these past few weeks. Puppies need lots of calories to grow and develop properly. This alone makes me strongly recommend that you see a veterinarian to help figure out why Leo is not eating. He could have an infection or parasites or even a problem with his liver or kidneys. A veterinarian will do a full physical exam and likely want to do some diagnostics to find out what is wrong. Also,fleas on puppies can be tricky to treat safely and effectively with flea products that are available over the counter. The fleas may also be contributing to Leo's symptoms. I'm not sure I understand you fully here, but I think you are asking what to give puppies to get their weight up if they have already been weaned from the mom. You really just have to continue giving them puppy food which is high in calories and then treat them for any worms that are present. If there are worms in the puppies system, then their presence is the likely cause for the low weight, so the focus should be on treating the worms. Your vet can test the puppies stool to be sure. Any worm can cause weight loss, including coccidia. Awww. It's very nice of you to take on this type of responsibility. The first thing you should do is to take him into the vet for an initial examination. They will be able to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong, versus simply malnutrition and dehydration. If this is the case, Champ will likely require something to eliminate gastrointestinal parasites. He belly looks very round in that picture, which in young dogs is usually associated with worms. This can be a very common cause of weakness and malnutrition, and the nutrients that he is consuming will not be properly absorbed until the parasites are eradicated. The veterinarian will also probably want to give some fluids, either subcutaneously or directly into the bloodstream. The method of delivery will ultimately be decided based upon the level of dehydration the vet detects. Champ will require a healthy, high quality large breed puppy food eventually. However, in the meantime, I would provide something like a Purina Critical Nutrition or HIll's A/D. These are prescription diets that are very high in fat and high calorie, and are typically not easily turned down by even the sickest of pets. Lastly, Champ probably needs your love, warmth and support. I am sure you have plenty of this.

I would get Frontline Spray. It's safe to use on puppies as young as two days of age. Zorro needs a puppy formulated food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Best of luck.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Gaining weight after malnutrition should be a slow and steady process. I would suggest getting a good quality puppy food, and feeding him about 75% of the amount recommended on the bag/day for about 3 days, and then increasing to 100% of the amount recommended for about 1 week, and then 125% for a couple weeks until she is proper size. At that point you can cut back to the normal recommended amount. Also, I would recommend deworming her, as this is often a cause of malnutrition, and also make sure she is treated for fleas, and vaccinated. Best of luck with Pluto.

Six weeks of age is young, but Mickey is old enough to be separated from his mother. You will need to feed him a puppy formulated food, and brands that I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. As for the fleas, I can give you a flea treatment program for him that's safe to use at six weeks of age. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Enjoy your puppy and I hope this helps!
