Just rescued a 4-week puppy with fleas/ticks. What food and treatment?

Six weeks of age is young, but Mickey is old enough to be separated from his mother. You will need to feed him a puppy formulated food, and brands that I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. As for the fleas, I can give you a flea treatment program for him that's safe to use at six weeks of age. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Enjoy your puppy and I hope this helps!

You should remove all the ticks with tweezers and then apply a flea and tick preventative spot on suitable for young puppies or Frontline spray (which is suitable for puppies). These are available at your veterinarian or in a pet shop.

Treating fleas in such tiny pups is definitely a challenge! You can try bathing Dallas in original blue Dawn dish soap to initially kill off any adult fleas. Just be sure to rinse and dry him well so that he doesn't get too cold. While it's not my favorite flea preventive in terms of how well it works, Frontline spray is the only over the counter product available for such tiny pups. Given his young age, I assume that Dallas will be going to his vet in the coming days or weeks for booster vaccinations. I would recommend taking her to a vet's office to get her shots as soon as you can, since she's at risk for contracting diseases like parvo or distemper right now if she's never been vaccinated. Your veterinarian can also get her started on a good quality flea medication. She will probably also need a fecal test and deworming to get rid of any parasites, which are very common in puppies. If you want to give her something for the fleas before you're able to get to the vet, K9 Advantix is the most effective over-the-counter option for fleas.

Bella Marie would benefit from a small breed puppy food. There are many brands available, those made by Hills, Purina and Royal Canin have veterinarians on staff to ensure their diets are well balanced and nutritionally adequate. I do not recommend flea collars-they do nothing for control of the overall flea population, are not very effective and, in a small dog like Bella Marie, run the risk of toxicity as well. Instead speak with your vet about which flea preventatives are most effective in your local area. There are a number of topical and oral forms available and I'm sure you will find one that suits your needs.
