Male or female Rottweiler puppy? What to check before buying?

Rottweilers, as a breed, can be very good pets - some are aggressive, but many are friendly and easy-going. I'm not sure if there was something about your puppy in particular that may have concerned your vet, such as signs of aggression or extreme fearfulness during the visit - if so, early referral to a veterinary behavior specialist would be the best option to determine if there is a problem and start working on it early in life. If the puppy is acting normal (friendly and curious, not overly anxious or aggressive towards anyone), there is no particular reason at this stage to think that he won't be a good pet when he's older.

Congratulations on your new puppy. Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is a genetic disorder passed on to pups from the mother and father of the litter. It is important to verify that your breeder has had the parents hips checked by a veterinarian with X-rays to determine if they have good hip confirmation. If they have had the parents hips "certified" as good or excellent, that increases the chance that your pup will have good hips. If the parents have hip dysplasia, that trait will likely be passed down to the puppies. Your pups hips will be what they are going to be...you cannot change that. You can feed your puppy a good quality puppy food, maintain a healthy weight and build up the proper muscle mass to keep them in good shape, but you cannot prevent hip dysplasia. It is always best to research the parents of a litter prior to purchasing a puppy. You can still ask the breeder to see if they took the appropriate steps of having the breeding pair's hips certified.

No it should be fine. I would just make sure you get him all of his vaccines and make sure he is socialized and trained properly. It is best to socialize them with other people and dogs when they are young, but you don't want to take the to a public park where you don't know the vaccine history of the other dogs. It is best to take them to a friend's house that has a healthy, fully vaccinated dog to help with socialization. I hope this helps!

Cute picture! Wonder if thats a boy or girl.... ;) There's no hard and fast rules about temperament when it comes to gender in dogs. An intact female and an intact male will both be more likely to show aggression than one who has been neutered or spayed, so regardless of which you choose, please have him/her neutered/spayed. You can find all kinds of things online that say that females are easier to train, or that males tend to be more loyal or attached to you... after practicing veterinary medicine for 14 years --interacting with literally thousands of dogs and their people --and having a number of dogs of my own, both male and female, I can just reiterate what I said initially--there is no hard and fast rule. I don't even really think its fair to make generalizations because I just don't think they hold true often enough. Male dogs are more likely to mark. Once they are neutered this is less of an issue but they will still seem to carry a "reserve" for each tree along your walking route. From a health standpoint, theres not a huge difference either (especially if spayed or neutered)-- one isn't inherently "healthier" than the other. The biggest thing is to meet the dog individually and see what you're looking for in a personality rather than automatically ruling out one or the other based on whether they are girl or boy. I think this may be a repetition of a previous question... That is absolutely fine, as long as Gohan is appropriately vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas. She should be dewormed once a month with a general dewormer. Minimum recommended breeding age is 18 months. If you are going to breed her she should be up to date on her vaccinations and deworming BEFORE breeding.

Most importantly I would check that your puppy is coming from a reputable breeder. You should be able to see at least the mother with the puppies and if not this would be a major red flag. When visiting the puppies should look bright and in good condition. The breeder should be able to tell you when the puppies were wormed. You can also ask the breeder about whether there is any history of conditions such as elbow or hip dysplasia in their dogs. If you are unhappy about anything I would walk away.
