My male dog is panting heavily after mating. When will he relax?

I can understand being worried about your male dog, but this is normal. He wants to mate with Bailey, and the hormones are effecting him and causing him to pant. This can go on for days, and sometimes males can will stop eating and can injury themselves trying to get to the female so they can mate. If you do not want puppies, the only way to stop this behavior is to move either Bailey or your male dog out of the house. Preferably the male dog so you can keep Bailey isolated to prevent her from mating. Have him go stay at a friend's house while she is in heat (this lasts three to four weeks). I would also make an appointment with the vet to have him neutered, and I would get Bailey spayed after she is out of heat. Otherwise, you will have to deal with this every time she is in heat. If the panting is non stop then it is not normal but panting after giving birth is considered normal in the first 24 hours after birth. one of the reasons could be exhaustion but it could also be due to milk fever which is a condition caused by lack of calcium due to milk production. in such a case i would recommend a vet visit to check her calcium level and rectify it accordingly (usually by injection and oral calcium).

These are vague signs that could indicate several things like anxiety or pain. If there is something they could be making him anxious (rain, thunder, fireworks, new people, etc), then he will calm down afterwards. Just give him some extra attention. If there is nothing you can think that is making him anxious he could be in discomfort. I would have your vet do an exam to make sure he doesn't need any pain medication. The only way to know for sure is to have an x-ray taken by your vet. If she is still panting and having contractions, then this is a sign that she isn't finished delivering pups yet - so if she's doing this and hasn't had any pups in the past hour, I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet for x-rays. Normally, when labor is finished, the mother will settle down and lick her puppies (or puppy, in this case) and allow them to nurse. If she still seems distressed and panting, or is still having visible contractions, then I would be concerned that there may be one or more puppies still inside her.

If he seems to be breathing heavier than normal then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can take a chest x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs. It is not normal for a dog to breath heavy for an hour after exercise so I think you should definitely have him evaluated by a vet.

If you have not had a veterinarian take x-rays to determine how many puppies are left you should take her to your veterinarian or an emergency hospital to make sure all puppies are out. She could still be in labor. Low calcium would be another possibility. This could also be a behavioral change. I would not be too concerned about no afterbirth or placentas - it is fairly rare for them to cause a problem when retained.
