My male dog's nipple bled. Is this normal? What should I do?

Just like in people, any unusual discharge from a nipple is not normal and could be a sign of mammary cancer. I do not think she needs to be rushed to a vet, however you should make an appointment with a vet to have it examined. It may be just mastitis, but it could be a malignant condition as well.

He may have been licking his nipple which would have possibly made it swell. However it is also possible that this is hormonal problem or even an infection. If the nipple keeps growing, or turns red or hot or starts discharging fluid, then you should take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

Thank you for proving a picture of Hugo! It looks like one of his nipples is swollen. This could be due to trauma. He could have injured that area, and he now has a hematoma. It could also be an infection, which could be caused if he received a bite from another animal. It could be a reaction to an insect bite, such as an allergic reaction. Finally, it could be a fungal infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain so I do recommend it getting checked out by a vet. If there were stitches in place it's possible they may have torn since the area looks open (it's hard to tell from a photo alone). If the are is oozing or stitches are obviously torn open I would bring Hank back to your vet for care. Otherwise, keeping the area clean and dry can help prevent infection. Hank should also be on strict kennel rest and leashed-walks only along with an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent him from pulling any stitches until healed.

Clipper burn is a common problem after grooming, and it should go away on its own in 48 hours. You can use a little Neosporin to soothe and protect the skin, just make sure that Winnie isn't licking at it. However, occasionally nipples get caught in the clippers and get damaged - it's a pretty common problem! If you see that it is red, enlarged, with a creamy discharge, I recommend that Winnie see a vet for evaluation and oral antibiotics.
